Galatians 2:6 (ESV) And from those who seemed to be influential (what they were makes no difference to me; God shows no partiality)—those, I say, who seemed influential added nothing to me.
The translators here are using unnecessary harsh language. Even some Christian commentators agree on this:
Dan C
Primary source is a teaching by Rav S
Am I connecting the dots wrong here. The harsh language directed at the "false brethren" in verse 4 is warrented is it not?

In Hebrew thought “Name (Shem)” is synonymous with title. Your name is your character. Below are a few examples of what we (English) would consider titles. We only consider them names because they are untranslated: Melchizedek “King of Righteousness” Elimelech “God is my King” Abimelech “Father is my King” HaSatan “The Adversary” It is without doubt that these “titles” are meant to be used as names. All biblical Hebrew names have a meaning. And that meaning generally reflects the character of the person/place named. Proverbs 22:1 A good name is rather to be chosen than great riches, and loving favour rather than silver and gold. One earns a good or bad name. Matt 16:23 But he turned, and said unto Peter, Get thee behind me, Satan: thou art an offence unto me: for thou savourest not the things that be of God, but those that be of men. Here Peter’s (Stone’s) character and thus name is “The Adversary” or Satan.
Lucifer “shining one” commonly referred to as Venus today. Venus is the Morning and Evening star. Part of the time Venus is visible as the evening star, in the western sky, a few hours announcing the arrival of darkness. Which is what the king of Babylon was bringing to Israel. Part of the time, Venus is visible as the morning star, in the eastern sky, a few hours announcing the arrival of day. Which is why Jesus is referred to as the Morning Star. 2Pet 1:19 (NIV) And we have the word of the prophets made more certain, and you will do well to pay attention to it, as to a light shining in a dark place, until the day dawns and the morning star rises in your hearts. Rev 2:28 (NIV) I will also give him the morning star. Rev 22:16 (NIV) "I, Jesus, have sent my angel to give you this testimony for the churches. I am the Root and the Offspring of David, and the bright Morning Star."

Perceive to become aware of directly through any of the senses, especially by seeing or hearing.
I Cor. 1:20Where is the wise? where is the scribe? where is the disputer of this world? hath not God made foolish the wisdom of this world? 21For after that in the wisdom of God the world by wisdom knew not God, it pleased God by the foolishness of preaching to save them that believe. 22For the Jews require a sign, and the Greeks seek after wisdom: 23But we preach Christ crucified, unto the Jews a stumblingblock, and unto the Greeks foolishness; 24But unto them which are called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God, and the wisdom of God.
The New Testament is as much anti-Greek as it is anti-Jew. Jesus was killed by a joint effort between the Jews and Romans (Greeks). Paul was beaten and stoned by Jews and Greeks. I don't see why showing where the children of Israel disobeyed and were punished is different than showing were the Jews disobeyed and are going to be punished. Both are just showing the cultural practices of the time. When Israel repents they are saved. When Jews repent they are saved. It is the same story in both testaments.
By the way, as the facts stand right now there are no extant Hebrew manuscripts that predate the Greek manuscripts of the New Testament. You cannot prove your assertion that the New Testament was written in Hebrew first. And who made the Septuagint debacle that you speak of? It most certainly was not christians as that translation into Greek from Hebrew was made before Christ. The Jews translated the Old Testament into Greek in an effort to call those who had fallen into Hellenization to repentance.

Elijah did the same thing. In 1 kings we read the story of how Jezabel was making Elijah’s life so miserable Elijah asked G-d to take him home. The passage says that He goes to Beer Sheva and sits under a broom tree (not a juniper tree like the KJV says). The only thing that provides any shade down there are broom trees, which are more like bushes. After that Elijah goes to Mt. Sinai and there, the L-rd ministers to him.
The Plantagenet kings (King Richard the Lion Heart) used common broom (known as planta genista in Latin) as an emblem and took their name from it. The translators should have been aware of what broom is. Guest they didn't like King Richard.

Judges 4:1 And the children of Israel again did evil in the sight of the LORD, when Ehud was dead. Elizabeth, does the above scripture cause you to have averse feelings about “the children of Israel”? Would you be concerned about the tone of the scripture while reading it with your children? Does it convey a bad characterization of “the children of Israel? Would you draw your children’s attention to the verse to explain away the bad light that “the children of Israel” are being portrayed in?
alon, has the Old Testament been extensively tampered with, redacted and rewritten to reflect negatively on “the children of Israel”? You sir paint a very dim picture of the Jews yourself by implying that they would kill Paul for publicly correcting Peter. Acts 4:13 Now when they saw the boldness of Peter and John, and perceived that they were unlearned and ignorant men, they marvelled; and they took knowledge of them, that they had been with Jesus. Was Peter an educated man and a businessman? The thing that set Peter apart was the fact that he had been with Jesus.

Doesn't the same thing happen when you correct your child when he has done something wrong. Example: "Bob, that toy is not yours. Give it back." You are not telling Bob he is always an evil person. Rather you are tilling him that his present action is wrong.

When I was growing up, I was often called “the little Jew” because I always asked for price breaks on items that I would buy. I ask my dad what they meant when they called me “the little Jew”. He said that they meant that I had a good mind for business like the Jews did. So I wore the badge with pride. Let’s not allow the enemy to define our words and terms. If the enemy uses the term “the Jew” in a derogatory manor, we can’t allow that to affect our actions or use of it. Some folks use God as a curse word. We cannot allow that to be the way we think of God.

alon, I don’t have a problem with your quoting more scripture to get a better context. As I stated divorce was the primary concern in the scripture quoted. Even in your translation it appears that God is seeking “Godly offspring.” From the union of a man and woman. Leviticus 15:19-28 appears to show two separate counts of 7 days. One is during the flow (days of separation) which can go beyond the 7 days. See verse 25. The second count of 7 days starts after the flow starts as indicated in verse 28. Also notice in verse 24 that a man is unclean for 7 days after getting the flowers on him. As a side note separate beds are not required. Since the man lay with her during her flow. I am the youngest of 13 children (my dad had two wives at the same time. The two wives met when he had a car wreck). Once the local pastor was trying to enlist our neighbor (my adopted grandfather) in efforts to get us children into church, his reply was, “No way those children are the best behaved in the neighborhood and I don’t want those brats at your church messing them up.” Most of those “brats” were only children. As for poverty and squalor, the only running water we had was, when I ran to get it. I have got meals, clothing, and toys out of others garbage. I grew up a pagan but was never as “Godless” as those only children. Oh, I almost forgot, I can remember the day my 13 year old sister told me that she was going to be my mother (some time after the wreck). And truth be told, most of the time she was my father too, because daddy was gone weeks at a time working construction jobs. I guess he never heard of welfare. I can’t remember any churches beating a path to our door to give us anything either. I do remember the poor blacks bringing half a hog that they butchered to us to make a payment on a debt. But my dad would only take one shoulder for full payment of the debt. Large families are no more or less likely to divorce than small or medium families. The real question here is who has the right to open and close wombs. Did the matriarchs plead for their wombs to be opened or to be closed? Luke 23:29 For, behold, the days are coming, in the which they shall say, Blessed [are] the barren, and the wombs that never bare, and the paps which never gave suck. Why would they say that? Because of coming judgement. Why do we say that today?

Malichi 2:12The LORD will cut off the man that doeth this, the master and the scholar, out of the tabernacles of Jacob, and him that offereth an offering unto the LORD of hosts. 13And this have ye done again, covering the altar of the LORD with tears, with weeping, and with crying out, insomuch that he regardeth not the offering any more, or receiveth [it] with good will at your hand. 14Yet ye say, Wherefore? Because the LORD hath been witness between thee and the wife of thy youth, against whom thou hast dealt treacherously: yet [is] she thy companion, and the wife of thy covenant. 15And did not he make one? Yet had he the residue of the spirit. And wherefore one? That he might seek a godly seed. Therefore take heed to your spirit, and let none deal treacherously against the wife of his youth. 16For the LORD, the God of Israel, saith that he hateth putting away: for [one] covereth violence with his garment, saith the LORD of hosts: therefore take heed to your spirit, that ye deal not treacherously.
This passage deals manly with divorce but notice the answer to why God made two into one: “That he might seek a godly seed.” So the purpose of marriage is godly seed. From the beginning is has been so. Go forth and multiply. Another thread dealt with “nidda”, if you go back to those scriptures presented in that discussion, you will find that there is a 7 day cleansing after a 7 day flow which bring you to the 14th day of the woman’s cycle, which is the day of ovulation. Thus the man and woman were to come together at the woman’s fertile time. The laws of “nidda” were set up specifically to insure conception. When my wife and I were dating (fornicating), we used the knowledge of the ovulation time to avoid her becoming with child. We dated for 3.5 years without any children. After marriage, we started trying to follow the biblical mandate. We had 12 children roughly one every other year.

Hey Jimmie that sounds like an awful place. They have no right to put that sort of peer pressure on the congregation. If the members did fail to feed their families, was the 'church' willing to step back in and feed those lambs?[/quote] The pastor would take up a love offering for those who were unable to feed their families.

Proverbs 6:32 But whoso committeth adultery with a woman lacketh understanding: he that doeth it destroyeth his own soul.
God will use me to fulfill this scripture. I have an employee who has been meeting with a woman on company time. I will have to fire him. Thus removing his ability to provide for his family. This will strain his relationship with his wife. Then she will find out about the affair and most likely end the marriage. This man is a christian in good standing in a local church. So it is going to be another stain on the church.
Please pray that he will humble himself and repent before God. Pray for his wife and family to have strength for what lies ahead of them. Also, pray for me. It is not a pleasant job to perform.
