Ah yes, the doctrine of “soul sleep”. This is a hotly debated subject in Christianity.
I wouldn't say that this is strictly a Catholic doctrine, as we can see this demonstrated in the Jewish scriptures on several occasions. Here is just two examples to chew on...
"And when he had opened the fifth seal, I saw under the altar the souls of them that were slain for the word of G'd, and for the testimony which they held: And they cried with a loud voice, saying, How long, O Lord, holy and true, dost thou not judge and avenge our blood on them that dwell on the earth? And white robes were given unto every one of them; and it was said unto them, that they should rest yet for a little season, until their fellowservants also and their brethren, that should be killed as they were, should be fulfilled."
- Revelation 6:9-11
First the question is, "where is this altar"? If it is in heaven...so are they. And, if they are wondering when The L-rd will avenge His enemies, obviously they know something, and are conscience. And, we see this again in the following passage...
"And I heard as it were the voice of a great multitude, and as the voice of many waters, and as the voice of mighty thunderings, saying, AlleluYah: for the L'rd G'd omnipotent reigneth. Let us be glad and rejoice, and give honour to him: for the marriage of the Lamb is come, and his wife hath made herself ready.
And to her was granted that she should be arrayed in fine linen, clean and white: for the fine linen is the righteousness of saints."
- Revelation 19:6-8
How can the dead that know nothing proclaim, "AlleluYah: for the L'rd G'd omnipotent reigneth. Let us be glad and rejoice, and give honour to him: for the marriage of the Lamb is come, and his wife hath made herself ready"? Of course this is in perfect harmony with the story of Lazarus, and the rich man, and the saying of Yeshua found in Matthew 22:31-32.
As for the following passage...
"For to him that is joined to all the living there is hope: for a living dog is better than a dead lion. For the living know that they shall die: but the dead know not any thing, neither have they any more a reward; for the memory of them is forgotten."
- Ecc 9:4-5
There is a lesson being taught here. And, I believe it speaks to the futility of evil men. If the above passage is teaching about the righteous believers, it will have to comply with the whole of scripture. Let's take a look at the passage in a little more detail...
"For to him that is joined to all the living there is hope: for a living dog is better than a dead lion."
For the righeous saints is this true? Is a living righteous saint (whom would be compaired to a dog here) better than a dead saint? What does the scripture say?...
"Verily I say unto you, Among them that are born of women there hath not risen a greater than John the Immerser: notwithstanding he that is least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he."
- Matthew 11:11
The next passage that we are looking at in Ecclesiastes states...
"For the living know that they shall die"
But, the question is...shall the righteous ever really taste death?...
"Verily, verily, I say unto you, If a man keep my saying, he shall never see death."
- John 8:51
And, for the last section of Ecc. 9:5...
"but the dead know not any thing, neither have they any more a reward; for the memory of them is forgotten."
We have already seen in Revelation 19:6-8, Revelation 6:9-11 that these righteous saints whom died do know something. Furthermore, we also saw in these passages that they do have a further reward, and they indeed have not been forgotten. So, I think to say that this passage is Ecclesiastes is speaking of the righteous saints is doubtful.
Any thoughts?

There are only a few humans born to this earth that are now in heaven:
"And it came to pass, as they departed from Him, Peter said to Yeshua, Master, it is good for us to be here: and let us make three tabernacles; one for You, and one for Moses, and one for Eliyah: not knowing what he said." Luke 9:33 (Peter didn't know who was with Yeshua except throught the power of the Set-apart Spirit for our benefit.)
"By faith Enoch was translated that he should not see death; and was not found, because Elohim had translated him: for before his translation he had this testimony, that he pleased Elohim". Hebrews 11:5
(Enoch and Eliyah are anti-types of the 144,000 that will be translated at His Second Coming without seeing death, Moses is an anti-type of the resurrected saints at that time that will be brought forth from their graves.)
Purgatory and saints going to heaven upon death are Catholic doctrines that hold no weight in Scripture. "For the living know that they shall die: but the dead know not any thing, neither have they any more a reward; for the memory of them is forgotten. Also their love, and their hatred, and their envy, is now perished; neither have they any more a portion for ever in any thing that is done under the sun." Eccles. 9:5-6 ("Anything done under the sun" refers to this life. It is over the moment we die until our Redeemer's Second Coming.)
"Yeshua answered and said to them, You err, not knowing the Scriptures, nor the power of Elohim. For in the resurrection they neither marry, nor are given in marriage, but are as the angels of Elohim in heaven. But as concerning the resurrection of the dead, have you not read that which was spoken to you by Elohim, saying, I am the Elohim of Abraham, and the Elohim of Isaac, and the Elohim of Jacob? Elohim is not the Elohim of the dead, but of the living." Matthew 22:29-32
(Because we know that the Patriarchs are dead we can know that He is speaking of the "living" as only those born again in faith.) "Yeshua answered and said to him, Surely, surely, I say to you, Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of Elohim", John 3:3.
(Born again in faith) "I am crucified with Messiah: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Messiah lives in me: and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of Yah, who loved me, and gave Himself for me." Galatians 2:20
(It is not told who were among the saints resurrected at the time of His resurrection,
"And the graves were opened; and many bodies of the saints which slept arose, And came out of the graves after His resurrection, and went into the holy city, and appeared to many." Matthew 27:52-53. The Patriarchs knew their Savior.
"And have hope toward Elohim, which they themselves also allow, that there shall be a resurrection of the dead, both of the just and unjust." Acts 24:15 "But now is Messiah risen from the dead, and become the firstfruits of them that slept. For since by man came death, by man came also the resurrection of the dead. For as in Adam all die, even so in Messiah shall all be made alive. But every man in his own order: Messiah the firstfruits; afterward they that are Messiah's at His coming. Then cometh the end, when he shall have delivered up the kingdom to Elohim, even the Father; when he shall have put down all rule and all authority and power."1 Cor. 15:20-25.
(So the dead in Messiah sleep until He comes just as do those who do not know Him) They sleep and we wait patiently for His awesome Return when,
"For this we say to you by the word of YHVH, that we which are alive and remain unto the coming of the Master shall not precede them which are asleep. For the Master Himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of Elohim: and the dead in Messiah shall rise first: Then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Master in the air: and so shall we ever be with the Master. Wherefore comfort one another with these words." 1 Thes. 4:15-18.
