Many people, including myself think of Hebrew as a holy language to be spoken with power, and not lightly. I speak to my friends in Hebrew when we discuss or in that connection, but not when I simply go to an Israeli grocer; unless he only speaks Hebrew. Hey look, three stars, I am a FULL MEMBER!

Shalom Chumash614, I try to incorporate the Hebrew that I know when ever I can. But, of course this is usually only when there is someone else that can understand me, or if other's need, or wish to learn. Reuel

I have recently been a bit preoccupied with wanting to really learn Hebrew. I want to be able to read it well with understanding. I want to write in Hebrew and speak in Hebrew. Although I took Hebrew some time back, I have not lept up with it, except in the Prayers, and have forgotten enormous amounts of it. I have gotten myself back into it, studying it daily, with the desire to really "own" the language. I want it to become so natural that I pray easily in Hebrew.

Shalom sister, I think that is a great goal! I love reading in the Hebrew. It is one way to be a little more closer to Adonai's word. I think that all on this forum should spend some time learning Hebrew. Shavua tov, Reuel

i agree with Tzav_laTzav. I 've been reading a good book on learning Hebrew that is totaly amazing. When I learned of Beit, Gimel and in relation to the scripture spoken of by John the Baptiser--" He it is Who, coming after me, has come to be in front of me.."After me , Beit--Yeshua--coming behind Gimel, but in alphabetical order--preferred before me--so He is in front.Gimel makes the path clear for the Spirit... Hope that made sense...

Once upon a time I had a wonderful memory! I came to very late in my life, I have tried to learn Hebrew, with very poor results. It takes more than a dozen times for me to remember a new word and if it is left unused for a period of time I forget again although I am amazed sometimes(Shabbat leader reads a few verses in Hebrew) pick up a few words as it is read. So the only time for me to speak Hebrew is reading the transliterated blessings and songs in our Shabbat Seder(Seder Leil Shabbat) Although it is in English, I have "Wisdom in the Hebrew Alphabet" by Rabbi Michael L. Munk and it is a wonderful book! Had I come to and this book fifty years ago! Unless Adonai descides to restore my memory, I will have to be content with what I have! The desire is there, but the grey matter is not! I truely believe that at resurrection we will all hear and speak the Qodesh Lashown. Pure Language/Tahore Saphah. I hope my writing is close to right. May someone understand. Shalom

How well I know Achi!, I have studied for three years now. In reading, I do OK, my Prayers etc. are marginal. In conversation I do not seem to have very many opportunities; (of course I live about 20 miles from nowhere!). I hope and pray that at the very least, I will become proficient in prayer and thought. Maybe we should start a thread for general discussion in Hebrew? Does this forum support Hebrew font's? I have been able to post a very few words from time to time, (Unicode I assume). The old saying; "Practice makes perfect" If we have the option to converse in Hebrew, we may all benefit. Just a thought.
Shalom B'Yeshua Rick

Oh, man! To write posts in Hebrew? I'm not sure I could even begin to write relevant, sensible posts that way! Maybe I don't in English either!! : I am putting myseelf into "home school." What I am doing, to enliven my brain, is getting back into a college math book I did not finish aeons ago as well as picking up on some high school English I missed, that college did not touch on. I understand the lack of brain power, and this is what I am doing in an attempt to increase mine, so that I can better learn Hebrew. I am also learning a couple new computer programs for work. I don't know, but I think all this is helping. Less time on the computer, more time studying.

A Hebrew only thread? Great idea! We'd have to ask Reuel if the forum could be set up to support the fonts.

I try to speak Hebrew with my friends who understand it...but as yet my Hebrew is rather limited, which limits how often I speak it. lol. I don't think it is too holy for ordinary use. If we think about it, it was used for centuries by Israelites every day of their lives.
Shalom, Nachshon

אני לא אוהב לדבר עברית. יש לי חברים שתמיד רוצים לדבר אותה, אבל אחרי שהייתי כבר בשיעורים עבריתים כל יום, בדרך כלל אני רוצה לנוח ורק לדבר אנגית

It must be very difficult speaking in Hebrew when thinking in English. The basic elements of the language are more tied to Hebraic culture than what we are used to: for us a veil is simply an article that women may wear; but in Hebrew, to speak the word is to recount the entire story of Rebecca lighting off her camel. It's a lot of work. I can understand why you would prefer not to do it all of the time. However, the opportunities you are giving yourself to delve so deeply into the understanding of God's Word will be immensely rewarding.

It's a lot of work.
I can understand why you would prefer not to do it all of the time. However, the opportunities you are giving yourself to delve so deeply into the understanding of God's Word will be immensely rewarding. נו, זה הרעיון
