... ]After my long battle with my anti-missionary acquaintince, I simply withdrew for a while to heal, and read a lot. The pity of it is that this man continues to seek to convince even evangelical Christians that they are wrong in believing Yeshua is the Mashiach, complete with handouts about what is wrong with Yeshua's geneology. He does not take Virgin birth as worthy of discussion, but only a means of disqualifying Yeshua from inheriting from Yosef, and then stomps on the idea of a Virgin birth as silly...Miryam was obviously 'unchaste'.
What I still do not understand, barring demons, is why he is seeking to convince all Yeshua Believers that Yeshua is not for him, and thus should not be for them. The level of intensity to even stay in civil conversation with him is as bad as when speaking to committed athiests that shout at you. ...
Sounds like a Zealot. Not always a bad thing (I am as well), however anything can be taken too far. Look at the bright side: a.) when he's bothering Christians, he's not after Messianics, and b.) maybe some of what he tells them will sink in and you or another Messianic can step in and convince them of the truth.
I shall get a copy...it sounds fascinating, not that I particularly want to stomp on the Tanakh, particularly when I am beginning to learn the Hebrew of it.
It's more like insights as to how they view scripture. It is like Rav S always says, put your trust in the one who authored the book, not in the book itself.
Elohim chose to use men to write His Salvation History. These men faithfully wrote down what they saw, what they were told (by men and God) and what they saw in visions. However, being men they did make errors. Also being men, some men couldn't resist editing the word. Not surprisingly, priests were all too often the culprits here. But being God, His truth always comes through even in the redacted script. The problem comes when these things are shown to people who have all their lives held up their Bibles and repeated that this is the inerrant Word of God, like God just dictated the Bible. No, it was presented through the eyes of men who saw from their perspective; who had personalities that came through in their writing; and yes, men who were fallible. That is why sometimes thee are differences in synoptic passages. At times it is a collection of manuscripts which we no longer have. Genesis starts out with two different accounts of creation. Horrors! Should we throw out the Bible because there was an error? No, we should learn to look at it as the Jews do, as a source document explaining our faith- and trusting the God who is ultimately the object of the book, and our relationship with Him.
Is it inerrant? YOU BET IT IS! God's truth is there in every book, chapter and verse. No man can change that (and the church fathers tried!). We just may have to think a bit more to get to it. And remember Rav Sha'ul's warning to the Galations:
Galatians 3:1-2 (ESV) O foolish Galatians! Who has bewitched you? It was before your eyes that Jesus Christ was publicly portrayed as crucified. Let me ask you only this: Did you receive the Spirit by works of the law or by hearing with faith?
The law he was talking about was the myriad sects that existed at the time who were trying to convince people their way, which consisted of laws and restrictions of men (particularly setting restrictions meant for the priesthood and making ritual purity an everyday requirement), was the only way; much like your friend who places restrictions on scripture that do not exist.
I think that the main argument for Yeshua being Mashiach is the effect the Tanakh and has made on the last 1900 years of pagans...there are a lot less pagans, and there is an entire world that has heard of YHVH and Yeshua. Am I being too simplistic? ... had any of us known when we began where we were going, we might have counted the cost too high, when the cost is all borne by Yeshua. We simply perceive 'our light burden' as heavier than we would like it to be.
LOL! I still tell Christians they are pagans, because they require Jews to be grafted to their tree when saved. But honestly, I am half joking when I say that. There are many Christians who show the fruits of the Spirit in spades- way more than me. I can't imagine they won't make it. But they will suffer loss.
Matthew 5:19 (ESV) Therefore whoever relaxes one of the least of these commandments and teaches others to do the same will be called least in the kingdom of heaven, but whoever does them and teaches them will be called great in the kingdom of heaven.
By the time I found MJ, I was pretty much ready for it. I couldn't have known all that would be required of me, but I gladly accept most of it. Other things I have trouble with, but I'm improving (slowly, but ...). A good example: I knew I'd have to give up pork ... so be it. But I forgot about shellfish and (*gasp*) catfish! And rabbits! Man, what's a Southern boy to do!? But, I've given them up and don't regret it.
Yet even so, celebrate with me...my closest Christian friends are beginning the first step of keeping Shabbat...resting...and have proudly admitted they are no longer pre-trib Baptists. Which means I cannot complain of the 'the light burden' because they are just beginning to pick it up. Perhaps my odd ways had an effect on them when I bought the two foot long shofar, and let them blow it?
You're making more progress than I am. Stay with it!
