As a member of a church who believes that the "gifts of the Holy Spirit" have ceased, I was interested to know the views of you all in light of the traditional teaching and understanding of G-d's people the jews. Every week I see the large banner across the wall in the auditorium which says "Spirt filled" but don't see evidence of that "filling." Granted, I agree that the Holy Spirit leads us in our journey if we seek Him in truth, but dispite going to denominations which claim to have "the gifts," I have yet to be convinced. Recently, I have visited two messianic churches in my area...on was "Spirit filled" with people "falling out" in the Spirit, one was not. I think I will go to the less "charismatic" on as of now because, well....I'm skeptical of the other. I can't say they were not lead by the Spirit, but I saw no objective evidence that they were. (Nothing that a skeptic like me couldn't chalk up to the placebo effect and/or group think. Nothing miraculous.). I have decided that either the Holy Spirit really isn't in our churches because we are doing something wrong, He's there and we don't recognize Him, or My understanding of what He is and isn't is in error. He's not lost, I am. I think it could be the last one. Explain to me if you can from the jewish perspective what has been confused here (as you have done with other issues!). Are the gifts supposed to be here or not? Do you think they are here or don't you? Big subject, but important, don't you think???

A very difficult question, and subject indeed.
Let me start by saying that whatever gifts are spoken of in the scriptures are given for the edification of the community. Where I see error is in the flippant way in which the gifts are activated within the believing community.
I have no doubt that these gifts are for us, and should be active in the believing community. I do not think that G-d ever intended for us to have schools of prophecy teaching people how to activat these gifts. I do not think he intended for us to make people feel like they were second class citizens of the commonwealth because they were not active in a particular area of gifting.
I do not believe the gifts have ceased, I believe we have failed to understand how, and when to properly use the gifts in order to edify our community.
Shalom,
Yitzchak
