What is sin??....

Just thought I'd jump in with my 2 cents - here is my take on what sin is:
1st mention of sin in the Word is here-G-d speaking to Cain:

***Don't wish to offend but I usually use 2 translations for clarity:

KJV Gen. 4:7 If thou doest well, shalt thou not be accepted? and if thou doest not well, sin lieth at the door. And unto thee shall be his desire, and thou shalt rule over him.

NIV Gen. 4:7 If you do what is right, will you not be accepted? But if you do not do what is right, sin is crouching at your door; it desires to have you, but you must master it."

***This is what sin is and how it is formed:

KJV James 1:14 But every man is tempted, when he is drawn away of his own lust, and enticed.
15Then when lust hath conceived, it bringeth forth sin: and sin, when it is finished, bringeth forth death.

NIV James 1:14 but each one is tempted when, by his own evil desire, he is dragged away and enticed. 15Then, after desire has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and sin, when it is full-grown, gives birth to death.

***This makes it really plain:

KJV 1st John 3:4 Whosoever committeth sin transgresseth also the law: for sin is the transgression of the law.

NIV 1st John 3:4 Everyone who sins breaks the law; in fact, sin is lawlessness.

***But was is most important is what you should DO about sin & that is found here:

KJV 1st John 1: 5 This then is the message which we have heard of him, and declare unto you, that God is light, and in him is no darkness at all.
6If we say that we have fellowship with him, and walk in darkness, we lie, and do not the truth:
7But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship one with another, and the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin.
8If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us.
9If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
10If we say that we have not sinned, we make him a liar, and his word is not in us.

***Really Good advice about sin:

KJV Proverbs 28:13 He that covereth his sins shall not prosper: but whoso confesseth and forsaketh them shall have mercy.

NIV Proverbs 28:13 He who conceals his sins does not prosper, but whoever confesses and renounces them finds mercy.

KJV James 15:16 Confess your faults one to another, and pray one for another, that ye may be healed. The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much.

NIV James 15:16 Therefore confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous man is powerful and effective.


And in case there is any doubt about who sins:

KJV Romans 3:9 What then? are we better than they? No, in no wise: for we have before proved both Jews and Gentiles, that they are all under sin;
10As it is written, There is none righteous, no, not one

NIV Romans 3:9 9What shall we conclude then? Are we any better? Not at all! We have already made the charge that Jews and Gentiles alike are all under sin. 10As it is written:
"There is no one righteous, not even one

I remember being very young (six, maybe seven) and hearing that the word "sin" means to miss the mark. That's great! This is real information and so I asked the question, "What am I shooting at?" No one could give me an answer. Imagine pastors with doctorates in theology and Bible languages being stumped by a toe-haired kid that couldn't keep his shoes tied or his shirt tucked in. It was certainly baffling to me. This is because "the mark" is . John tells us in 1st John 4:3 that sin is transgression of the Law. Paul says in Romans 3:20 that "by the Law is the knowledge of sin." is the goal fo rwhich we shoot in our attempt to live righteously. Of course, we never hit it with any consistency. Even if we find the corner of the target, we don't hit the bullseye. It's not that the target is so far or away. It's just that we're such lousy shots. Fortunately, Messiah Yeshua is there gathering up our arrows. There is no condemnation for those who are in Messiah Yeshua.

I would though say my belief is that the perfection in which YHWH created man is the target. I think that is he sight line (targeting devise) that Adonai gave us to use in our attempt to hit the target.

Yes, if we claim that He is a King, and has a Kingdom, He most certainly has laws that His subjects are expected to follow. The Kingdom laws can be found in the .

Can you tell me some of the Laws in the ?

I would recommend that you start reading from the book of Beresheet (Genesis) to Devarim (Deuteronomy) for these laws and instructions given by The King of The Universe. All other scripture springs from these books. The is the foundation for all other scripture. To get more specific there are the Ten Commandments...but, most often the fourth (weekly 7th day Sabbath) is blatantly ignored and rejected in Christianity. There are the Kosher laws (Vayikra/Lev. 11), the Moedim/Feasts (Vayikra/Lev. 23), and many others. Happy study to you! And, feel free to ask any questions as you come to a mitzvah (command) that you have a question on.

Also, during every Sabbath service at our Synagogue we read a weekly portion from the . It is a great way to learn more about the Kingdom constitution.

If I may...

I believe that sin is, quite simply, deviation from God's Will. Whatever God's Will encompasses, should we in our free will choose something other than God's Will, sin is created.

And while I believe that the Law is exemplary of God's Will, I find it impossible that it should encompass the WHOLE of God's Will. If it is impossible that all the books in the world could contain all that Jesus did (John 21:25), then surely the whole of God's WILL would be even greater!

When we pay such extreme attention to a list of "do's and dont's", we inevitably start to look for loopholes, such as the rope that an Orthodox Jew might tie to his property so that he might lawfully make a longer Sabbath journey. Thus, while transgressing the Law surely constitutes sin, I don't think that sin is LIMITED to transgressions of Mosaic Law. Rather, I believe that sin is the transgression of GOD'S Law, of which Mosaic Law is only a part.

Rather than the Law being exemplary of what we should DO, I believe that it is exemplary of who we should BE. A commandment obeyed out of obligation and not out of love is just as offensive to God as a commandment disobeyed.

Please take no offense. I'm still uncertain how Messianics view these things, and no offense is meant.

Paul says in 2nd Timothy 3:16-17 that all Scripture is given so that man may be complete. That means that it is all there. You don't need to look ahywhere else. There are no addendums or exceptions based upon personal circumstances. It is all covered by Scripture. As you begin to read the New Testament and the Prophets from a Hebraic perspective, you see that these writings/teachings come under the authoritative structure of : they add nothing nor take anything away, but demonstrate applications within the scope and context of .

The end of the Law (the "telos" or scope of the Law) is love out of apure heart. We don't gain a better understanding of the Law because we know what love is, rather we begin to understand the biblical definition of love by bringing ourselves under the authority of the Law.

I agree, the acomplish of the should be done by anyone born again through the act of the Ruah Hakadosh as Yeshua teached.
It's important (specially for us who recently starts walking into the right path of Elohim's Dvar) to clearly determine what are the original instructions given to be followed and distinguish them from the Jewish traditions.
