Yitro (Jethro) is said to bring the family of Moshe (Moses) to Sinai, and all the events of his visit happen there. However if we read critically we see the order here with the story placed after the war with Amalek. Ibn Ezra posits the story was intentionally placed in scripture just after the war with Amalek to give a comparison of the malevolent character of Amalek with the virtuous character of Yitro.
Yitro probably comes from the root יתר yeter, one meaning of which is abundance. His advice to Moshe to appoint leaders to judge the smaller points of friction in the tribes and thus share his workload certainly gave an abundance to Moshe! This priest of Midian, a foreigner to the Hebrews (though related by marriage to Moshe) helped God’s people immensely. Thus he lived up to his second name, רעואל Reuel, friend of God. Amalek on the other hand was the grandson of Esav, and thus related to the Hebrews. Not closely, but still a third cousin. He attacked the rear of the train of Hebrews where the weak and more defenseless were. Amalek represents the moral decay and depravity into which men can descend. God promises to wipe the Amalekites from the face of the earth.
Bring this lesson to today, where the Jews in Israel celebrate life and peace, while their Muslim neighbors desire only death, war and destruction. Their only guarantee of reaching Paradise is to die in Jihad; and most desirable jihad is killing Jews. This latest attack on Israel and the Jewish people is in the spirit of Amalek. The only solution is to completely eliminate this latest iteration of Amalek- Hamas.
I therefore stand with PM Netanyahu; I STAND WITH ISRAEL!
