Holiness
Isaiah 6:3 And one called to another and said:
“Holy, holy, holy is the Lord of hosts; may his glory fill the whole earth
1 Timothy 2:4 who desires all people to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth.
God desires all men to be saved, yet He will only save those who obey Him by repenting and putting their faith in Yeshua HaMoshiach; Himself a manifestation of God, and thus Himself Everlasting God!
Ezekiel 18:23 Have I any pleasure in the death of the wicked, declares the Lord God, and not rather that he should turn from his way שׁוּב מדֶּרֶךְ shûb m’derek and live?
To turn, or return is more than being sorry. It is more than turning away from sin. It is to return to that state which man had when he walked with his Creator in the Garden. My Green’s Interlinear has this as יְהֹוָה שׁוּב מדֶּרֶכו יְהֹוָה shûb m’derek’v YHVH. That would mean “return to The Lord.” Most English translations shorten the Name of God to חָיָה châyâh, to live. This could be because the ink sometimes flaked off and some words were changed in that text, which a copyist may have used as his source text. However this is by choice today, since we have both versions. And we have the entire Tenach- the Old Testament. The term “return is used throughout to describe repentance, as here:
Jeremiah 24:7 I will give them a heart to know that I am the Lord, and they shall be my people and I will be their God, for they shall שׁוּב shûb return to me with their whole heart.
save(d)- G4982 σώζω sōzō; sode’-zo σῶς sōs̄; to save, that is, deliver or protect (literally or figuratively): - heal, preserve, save, do well, be (make) whole.
Ancient Hebrews thought of salvation more in a literal sense; salvation from some harm, circumstance, or another entity. Spiritually, I would submit we are saved from:
harm- the second death
circumstance- life and death without our God and Savior
another entity- ha’satan, the enemy of our soul
John 15:6 If anyone does not abide in me he is thrown away like a branch and withers; and the branches are gathered, thrown into the fire, and burned.
Revelation 2:10 Do not fear what you are about to suffer. Behold, the devil is about to throw some of you into prison, that you may be tested, and for ten days you will have tribulation. Be faithful unto death, and I will give you the crown of life.
Enduring “to the end” ultimately is a condition for salvation:
Matthew 10:22 and you will be hated by all for my name's sake. But the one who endures to the end will be saved.
Matthew 24:12-13 And because lawlessness will be increased, the love of many will grow cold. But the one who endures to the end will be saved.
Deuteronomy 10:20 You shall יָרֵא yârê- reverence, respect, be in awe- fear the Lord your God. You shall serve him and hold fast- דָּבַק dâbaq- to impinge, cling; to catch; abide, hold fast, endure, follow close- to him, and by his name you shall swear.
Looking at some of the Hebrew terms above we get a better understanding.
1 John 1:5-10 This is the message we have heard from him and proclaim to you, that God is light, and in him is no darkness at all. If we say we have fellowship with him while we walk in darkness, we lie and do not practice the truth. But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus his Son cleanses us from all sin. If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. If we say we have not sinned, we make him a liar, and his word is not in us.
Isaiah 45:7 I form light and create darkness;
I make well-being and create calamity;
I am the Lord, who does all these things.
The parallelism here equates light and darkness with well-being and calamity. We can also say if we abide in His truth it will go better for us than if we submit to the lies of ha’satan. Light and darkness then euphemistically refer to both truth and our personal halacha, or walk with God.
Matthew 7:21 “Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but the one who does the will of my Father who is in heaven.
Titus 1:16 They profess to know God, but they deny him by their works. They are detestable, disobedient, unfit for any good work.
1 John 2:4 Whoever says “I know him” but does not keep his commandments is a liar, and the truth is not in him,
Obedience to the truth is not legalism, nor is it works for salvation. Works are a result of salvation. If a person doesn’t have the fruits of good works it’s because either they have not yet truly been saved or they have fallen away:
1 Timothy 4:1 Now the Spirit expressly says that in later times some will depart from the faith by devoting themselves to deceitful spirits and teachings of demons,
2 Peter 2:20-21 For if, after they have escaped the defilements of the world through the knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, they are again entangled in them and overcome, the last state has become worse for them than the first. For it would have been better for them never to have known the way of righteousness than after knowing it to turn back from the holy commandment delivered to them.
We are to be holy- qadosh,
1 Peter 1:15-16 but as he who called you is holy, you also be holy in all your conduct, since it is written, “You shall be holy, for I am holy.”
The fruit of our lives demonstrates clearly who we really are. And we are to be holy- קָדוֹשׁ qâdôsh; ἅγιος hagios- “set apart” to God.
Luke 6:44 for each tree is known by its own fruit. For figs are not gathered from thornbushes, nor are grapes picked from a bramble bush.
We either produce fruit pleasing to the Almighty, or that defames His Holy Name and thus incurs His wrath. Those believing in eternal security or doctrines of cheapened grace want to place all responsibility for salvation upon God. They don’t want personal responsibility to themselves be holy. These will all gather thorns, and taste of the second death:
Revelation 21:8 But as for the cowardly, the faithless, the detestable, as for murderers, the sexually immoral, sorcerers, idolaters, and all liars, their portion will be in the lake that burns with fire and sulfur, which is the second death.”
Hebrews 12:14 Strive for peace [quietness, rest] with everyone, and for the holiness without which no one will see the Lord.
Those who claim the Name of the Most High must be faithful, obedient to the end. Otherwise they will not be with Yeshua in the World to come.
Revelation 17:14 They will make war on the Lamb, and the Lamb will conquer them, for he is Lord of lords and King of kings, and those with him are called and chosen and faithful.”
The well known Parable of the Ten Virgins tells us that many of those who claim to follow Yeshua will not be allowed to enter into His feast- His moed, or appointed time. They do not have the “oil” which is obtained by a relationship with Yeshua by communion through His Spirit. This does not mean partaking of any sacrament. It means walking daily with God. Being in the Word and in prayer. When the final shofar sounds it will be too late, because you cannot develop that relationship all at once. The foolish virgins- those who have accepted El Elohe Yisroel as their own yet do not develop this relationship, this walk in faith and obedience were too late in their efforts. They slept, not thinking He will come like a thief in the night:
Matthew 25:1-12 (redacted) “Then the kingdom of heaven will be like ten virgins who took their lamps and went to meet the bridegroom. Five of them were foolish, and five were wise. For when the foolish took their lamps, they took no oil with them, but the wise took flasks of oil with their lamps. … they all became drowsy and slept. … And while they (the foolish virgins) were going to buy (oil), the bridegroom came, and those who were ready went in with him to the marriage feast, and the door was shut. Afterward the other virgins came also, saying, ‘Lord, lord, open to us.’ But he answered, ‘Truly, I say to you, I do not know you.’1 Thessalonians 5:1-5 Now concerning the times and the seasons, brothers, you have no need to have anything written to you. For you yourselves are fully aware that the day of the Lord will come like a thief in the night. While people are saying, “There is peace and security,” then sudden destruction will come upon them as labor pains come upon a pregnant woman, and they will not escape. But you are not in darkness, brothers, for that day to surprise you like a thief. For you are all children of light, children of the day. We are not of the night or of the darkness.
Again, light (truth, revelation, obedience, the Word) and darkness (deception, lies, sloth, unbelief)- two different walks; two different paths. Which will you choose?
Isaiah 6:3 And one called to another and said:
“Holy, holy, holy is the Lord of hosts; may his glory fill the whole earth
1 Timothy 2:4 who desires all people to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth.
