Once again, to remind everyone, I am commenting over these mishnot from a Messianic perspective, from the written and "Yeshua" perspective. Unfortunately, many of the writs in the Talmud were by non-messianic rabbis.
MISHNAH 5: YOSEF BEN YOCHANAN (Chief Justice) of the Sanhedrin in the 2nd century BCE) said:
"Let your house be open wide, and let the needy be members of your household. and talk not much with women." He quoted the sages saying; "He that talks much with women brings evil upon himself, neglects the study of , and at last will inherit Gehenna"
Well, first of all, to whom should we open our house? to anyone? to thieves? to dishonest characters? to those who deceive? How do we know who is who? In this day and age, we have to be careful to whom we open our house. Yes, to someone who is in need of food, perhaps shelter for a night or two, but without knowing who it is, we still run a safety risk, especially if we have a family. Yes, one could open his or her house, but think twice.
"Let the needy be members of your household".
Yes indeed, we must provide first for the needs of our household, our wives (husbands) children, etc, before that outside of our household, lest we be "lights to the world, but darkness inside" If we receive a box of lentils, with 10 bags, and our family has need, and also the neighbor has need, we can give 5 bags to the neighbor and keep 5 for our family. even though we might have to eat smaller portions.
"Talk not much with women" Well, doesn't that depend on who the woman is?........ He that talks much with women brings evil upon himself.".....Again, doesn't that depend on who the woman is? Talking with a wife brings more wisdom and new insight, good advice, that is if the wife is the woman of Proverbs 31. Yet there are women that have evil hearts and intentions, those that prey on men to entice them to sexual sin, yes, those one must avoid lest evil befalls the unwary man. Yet we are warned of these women in scripture, especially in Proverbs.
However, we might say the same about men. There are many men who will bring evil upon other men. An evil-hearted man will bring as much destruction upon another man as a woman will. So, beware of either sex, if evil is the intention, it doesn't matter if it is "she" or "he".
...neglects the study of ...
There are many distracts in this world that can distract a man from the study of . We shouldn't blame a woman for distracting a man from study. As a matter of fact, there are wise women who will encourage their husbands in the study of , and to "not neglect" the study of the WORD. But there are men who get easily distracted by "pretty faces" "pretty legs" or "sports" and study will fall to the wayside, or "work" "making extra $$" will cause a man to neglect the study of , so we shouldn't put all the blame on the woman. Our wives are important, our families are important, our jobs are important, but so is study. There should be a balance in all.
...at last, will inherit Gehenna...
A man or a woman doesn't inherit "Gehenna" by neglecting to study , nor by doing or not doing certain "things" (like idle talk with women or with other men) it isn't what we do, it is rather what we DON'T do. When we DON'T recognize Yeshua as LORD and Savior, we are headed for Gehenna...
The only way a person, either a man or a woman, will "inherit Gehenna (Hades, Hell,) is to reject the free gift of "Yeshuah" (salvation) through "Yeshua" (Salvation through YAH) rejecting his one-time atonement on the cross for all of our sins, past, present, and future. It is not God's will that ANYONE go to hell, people end up "inheriting" hell by choice. So, better inherit eternal life in Heaven, than in hell or "Gehenna" which do you think is the better choice?
MISHNAH 6
"YEHOSHUA BEN PERAHYAH" said: "Provide yourself with a teacher and a study companion and judge all men favorably."
Absolutely. We all need teachers of the WORD, but be sure that the teacher teaches that the /The Bible is 100% inspired by the Holy Spirit, and that Yeshua is God in the flesh, and that HE is the only Way, the Truth, and the Life, our Savior, and Redeemer. Because of what worth is a teacher that teaches contrary to the Living WORD. One who teaches falsehoods? the student then will be headed down the road to utter confusion.
Yes, it is good to have a study companion, he or she might understand something that we might not understand, or we might have insight that can be shared with the companion. Two heads are better than one. "Judge all men favorably" Judge in accordance to God's Word, but not condemn. Allow the Word of God to judge our fellow man or study companion. The WORD brings wisdom always, and correct judgment.
