MISHNAH 3:
Antigonos (the first Jewish scholar to assume a Greek name) who was a talmid of Shimeon HaTzdik used to say:
"BE NOT LIKE SLAVES WHO MINISTER TO THEIR MASTERS FOR THE SAKE OF RECEIVING REWARDS, BUT FOR THE SAKE OF NOT RECEIVING REWARDS, YET LETTING THE FEAR OF HEAVEN BE UPON YOU."
We ask ourselves, why do we work for our masters? Well, I guess we wouldn't refer to our employers as "masters" since we are not slaves, but employees with a relationship with employers, managers, bosses, supervisors, etc... Is there a reward for our service? I would say yes; being our paychecks. The reward being that we can support our families, give to the LORD our tithes and offerings from the same.
Yet we should work for our employers not so much for "eye service" only doing our best when we are in sight of those that are appointed over us, but even when the "eyes are away from us" working as unto the LORD. "The Fear of Heaven" being the respect and awe that we hold for He who is in Heaven. because YHVH looks down upon us and we will be held accountable for the job we do, how do we represent the KING of kings and LORD of Lords? We receive our just rewards for jobs well done on earth, in the form of paychecks and bonuses, yet the rewards in Heaven are worth a lot more. So, work now for our bosses as if we are working for the "Top Boss" of them all. Yeshua HaMashiach.
MISHNAH 4
Rabbi Yosef Ben Yozer of Zeredah, who was from a priestly family during the time of the Maccabees, said:
"LET YOUR HOUSE BE A MEETING PLACE FOR THE SAGES, AND SIT AMID THE DUST OF THEIR FEET, AND DRINK IN THEIR WORDS WITH THIRST."
Yet not everyone is capable of opening their house to teachers. Some houses may be small and crowded, while some may have very large homes in which to invite visiting preachers, teachers, evangelists, rabbis, etc. To those who have the ministry of hospitality, such as Abraham, YHVH will indeed provide a place to entertain and invite such sages to teach and bring the Word of God (in a more private setting).
...And sit amid the dust of their feet...In ancient times, the rabbis used to sit on a wooden bench and the students sat on the ground and listened and hopefully, took notes if they had the luxury of paper. Today, the rabbis, pastors, preachers, ministers will stand behind the pulpit and the students will sit in cushioned pews. Kind of different today. In some places, like our churches in El Salvador, there are hardwood benches or white plastic chairs which can be taken up and stacked, but there is always a "Bema" where the pastor/rabbi can stand and teach/preach. Of course, I would much prefer the "sitting" as in the days of old.
...and drink in their words with thirst... Well, that depends on their words. Are these teachers, sages, rabbis, pastors, preachers, teaching the pure Word of God? or are lies and deceptions being introduced? We must be careful to whom we listen. Not all preachers teach the truth, some are false teachers that come to deceive. So, how do we know who to listen to, and to whose words we should "drink with thirst?"
We need to listen to and drink their words with thirst, those who teach...
1. salvation comes by Yeshua and by Yeshua only. Through faith and not by works.
2. The one-time blood sacrifice of Yeshua satisfied all the demands of righteousness of YHVH.
3. We come into a restored relationship with God by being "Born-again" according to John 3:3
4. The Bible is 100% Word of God, it is the "whole " (Whole Instruction) with nothing missing.
5. We will all live forever, either in the New Jerusalem in Heaven or in Hell (Hades, Gehenna) the choice is ours
to make.
6. We are all part of a fallen race which came through the first Adam, yet restored by the Second Adam (Being
Yeshua)
7. Yeshua is Elohim, He is ONE (Echad) Part of the "Three-in-one"
8. Yeshua rose from the dead and thus conquering death through His own death.
9. We are all "B'nei Elohim" through Yeshua and are part of HIS family of believers, brothers, sisters in the
faith.
10. We are called to do good works (Mitzvoth) by obeying the commandments and teaching others to so the same, not
to achieve righteousness, but because of the fact that we are saved. (never the other way around).
I guess we could go on and on, but I think you understand. Anyone else that comes and preaches and teaches doctrines that go against these basic teachings of the , we should "shake their dust from off our feet" and "bow out gracefully" Remember that the LORD has His teachers and so does HaSatan. Only HaSatan comes to deceive and destroy
while the LORD sends His sages to teach the truth and edify the body of Yeshua.
