Yes, you are correct. In the Catholic Church I used to attend there is a massive cross at the back wall and images of christ at the side walls and during the service I would zero in on the cross and pictures and pray. I see what you mean I can have the 10 commandments plaque or pic on my wall just not use it to pray or focus on it when praying.
I always seems to have the need to have a vision of something when I pray, sometimes it's Christ standing over me with his hand on my head and sometimes it's a kinda human image of God in the sky, is that idolatry too?
My lay opinion is it does sound like idolatry, yes.
How do you pray, just four on the words along or other please?
Maybe this will help. In the 3rd century CE the Mishna tells of the last of the great miracle workers, Rabbi Haninah ben'Doza. When he would pray for the sick, he would say "This one shall live" or "This one shall die," and it was always so. When asked how he knew, he replied "If my prayer is fluent, I know my prayer is accepted and they will live. But if not, I know my prayer is rejected and they will die."
Notice he did not say "If I see God giving a thumbs up ... ." The focus was on the prayer. And it was not whether his prayer was said eloquently, with flourishes and inflections or like he was out of breath. He sounds like a very down to earth individual, so I imagine his prayers were (like the Jewish people) very straight forward. No, it is the presence and agreement of God that makes those prayers go smoothly. No wild emotion, no visions on which to focus, nothing except if his words went smoothly or not. And MIRACLES happened when this man prayed!
