Name of Par’shah- 43.3 Massa’ei- Stages
Par’shah- Numbers 33:1– 36:13
D’rash: Chapter 33 is a recounting of the journeys of the Hebrew people. I do see one important commandment there, however:
Numbers 33:52 (ESV) then you shall drive out all the inhabitants of the land from before you and destroy all their figured stones and destroy all their metal images and demolish all their high places. Seems an odd commandment to say it applies today, however this is one our churches and more recently Messianic synagogues have forgotten or ignored to their harm and the harm of the nation. We may not go forth and kill them today, but we should be out winning souls, bringing the truth to a lost world in our own back yard. Driving the enemy of our souls into hiding. But too many Messianics seem bent on changing the church so much they forget about the lost. We are at a point where we either start winning this country back soul by soul, or we may lose it.
Chapter 34 gives the boundaries of ha’Eretz, which are much larger than those of the Nation of Israel today. It also lists the tribal chiefs. Chapter 35 deals with cities for the Levites, including cities of refuge:
Numbers 35:8 (ESV) And as for the cities that you shall give from the possession of the people of Israel, from the larger tribes you shall take many, and from the smaller tribes you shall take few; each, in proportion to the inheritance that it inherits, shall give of its cities to the Levites.” This points up an important biblical principle; to whom the Lord giveth much, He requires much. To whom the Lord gives less, He requires not as much.
Numbers 35:11-12 (ESV) then you shall select cities to be cities of refuge for you, that the manslayer who kills any person without intent may flee there. The cities shall be for you a refuge from the avenger, that the manslayer may not die until he stands before the congregation for judgment. Another principle is mercy and protection for the innocent. However note the protection of these cities of refuge have limits. He still must stand trial to determine his guilt or innocence, and if innocent he leaves the city at his own risk of death. Until the cohen gadol dies, he is just in a bigger prison. Our courts today have forgotten this principle that a man must account for his actions. They err so much on the side of “protection” that they are no longer about truth and justice, guilt or innocence. Instead they are about loopholes and expensive lawyers to tell the best lies and tie the opposition in endless procedures. We badly need legal reform.
Chapter 36 ends this parashah with the laws of inheritance due to a woman marrying outside her tribe. So again we have only one commandment applicable today, and I may be stretching the point a bit with that. However next week we start in Deuteronomy, so hang onto your seats because the commandments will come hard and fast!
