Name of Par’shah- 41.3 Pinchas
Par’shah- Numbers 25:10-30:1
D’rash: We start out with the zeal of Phinehas in ch. 25, and the census of the new generation in ch 26. Moshe instructed the elders as to how the inheritance was to be made when they entered the land. There are some principles worth contemplating here, but no real commandments for us today. However in ch.27 we come to the case of the daughters of Zelophehad.
Recall their father had died in the wilderness, and he had no sons. So they petitioned Moshe for an inheritance in the name of their father, to be given to them. Moshe went to our Shofet, our Judge, who is the Almighty and this was the reply:
Numbers 27:8-11 (ESV) And you shall speak to the people of Israel, saying, ‘If a man dies and has no son, then you shall transfer his inheritance to his daughter. And if he has no daughter, then you shall give his inheritance to his brothers. And if he has no brothers, then you shall give his inheritance to his father's brothers. And if his father has no brothers, then you shall give his inheritance to the nearest kinsman of his clan, and he shall possess it. And it shall be for the people of Israel a statute and rule, as the Lord commanded Moses.’” While inheritances are subject to the laws of our own lands today, still we can leave instructions in our wills to allocate our assets when we die. This is the biblical model for that allocation.
The rest is Yehoshua’s succession of Moshe and instructions on the offerings, for which we have neither Mishkan nor Temple. So again we are a bit light on commandments that apply to us today.
