Name of Par’shah- 22.3 Vayak’hel, He Assembled
Par’shah- Ex 35:1-38:20
Haftara- 1 King 13-26, 40-50
D’rash: There are not many commandments here, and we have two par’shao this week; so I’ll keep this short.
Exodus 35:2 (NASB) “For six days work may be done, but on the seventh day you shall have a holy day, a sabbath of complete rest to the Lord; whoever does any work on it shall be put to death. The Sabbath and its serious nature is again stressed. From this Rabbinical Judaism takes the commandment that “The court must not inflict punishment on Shabbat.” I’m not seeing that here. Regardless, there will be punishment for those breaking Adonai’s Shabbat at some point. HaShem is serious about this moed.
Exodus 35:3 (NASB) You shall not kindle a fire in any of your dwellings on the sabbath day. Kindling a fire had to do with cooking or work in ancient times. And still does today. But a heatr that comes on and off on a thermostat I don’t think would be a violation. Nor would be restarting a stove that went out so your family doesn’t get sick. Preservation of life and health is the higher mitzvah. Keeping a warming device on for food is ok, unless it stops for some reason. Starting or restarting it on Shabbat would be a violation.
Exodus 35:5a (NASB) ‘Take from among you a contribution to the Lord; whoever is of a willing heart, let him bring it as the Lord’s contribution:’ the congregation and its full time officers depend on our contributions to survive and operate, doing the Lord’s work. A tithe, or 10% is customary, but often not enough. We should give generously.
Exodus 35:10 (NASB) ‘Let every skillful man among you come, and make all that the Lord has commanded:’ “Tithing” is more than just 10% of your income. It is giving of your time and talents to do the work necessary for the congregation the thrive.
