Name of Par’shah- 21.3 Ki Tisa, When You Take
Par’shah- Exodus 30:11–34:35
Haftara- 1 Kings 18:1-39
D’rash: There is a lot here, and this parashah contains the ch. 34 list which YHVH m’Kaddesh, God Who Sanctifies (Ex 31:13) calls the “Ten Words.” So I am going to break it into two parts: the Ten Commandments and all other commandments. We’ll start with the latter:
* Exodus 30:22-23a,24-25,32-33 (ESV) The Lord said to Moses, “Take the finest spices: of liquid myrrh 500 shekels, and of sweet-smelling cinnamon half as much, …, and 500 of cassia, according to the shekel of the sanctuary, and a hin of olive oil. And you shall make of these a sacred anointing oil blended as by the perfumer; it shall be a holy anointing oil. … It shall not be poured on the body of an ordinary person, and you shall make no other like it in composition. It is holy, and it shall be holy to you. Whoever compounds any like it or whoever puts any of it on an outsider shall be cut off from his people.’” Do not reproduce anointing oil; do not anoint anyone other than priests with this oil.
* Exodus 30:34-35,37-38 (ESV) The Lord said to Moses, “Take sweet spices, stacte, and onycha, and galbanum, sweet spices with pure frankincense (of each shall there be an equal part), and make an incense blended as by the perfumer, seasoned with salt, pure and holy. … And the incense that you shall make according to its composition, you shall not make for yourselves. It shall be for you holy to the Lord. Whoever makes any like it to use as perfume shall be cut off from his people.” Do not reproduce incense. These two commandments are very important today as there are some Messianic assemblies and others calling themselves Messianic who, in their zeal try to recreate these compounds which are to be set apart for use in the Temple service of Kadosh Yisroel, the Holy One Of Israel (Psalm 78:41).
Exodus 31:12 (ESV) And the Lord said to Moses, “You are to speak to the people of Israel and say, ‘Above all you shall keep my Sabbaths, for this is a sign between me and you throughout your generations, that you may know that I, the Lord, sanctify you. You shall keep the Sabbath, because it is holy for you. Everyone who profanes it shall be put to death. Whoever does any work on it, that soul shall be cut off from among his people. Again the command to keep Shabbat; and it is emphasized by saying “Above all you shall keep my Sabbaths.” And it is further emphasized by being in the list of 10 Commandments in both Ex 20 & 34.
Exodus 34:26- (ESV) then Moses stood in the gate of the camp and said, “Who is on the Lord's side? Come to me.” And all the sons of Levi gathered around him. And he said to them, “Thus says the Lord God of Israel, ‘Put your sword on your side each of you, and go to and fro from gate to gate throughout the camp, and each of you kill his brother and his companion and his neighbor.’” In choosing whether to serve YHVH Elohim, the Lord Your God (Gen 27:20) or family and friends, we are to cut off all others and serve our Elohim.
I deleted several principles that bordered on commandments to keep this short enough to be manageable. So I recommend reading this parashah carefully and studying for yourselves with an eye to those principles and whatever else you can glean. If you come up with anything you think important, please post it.
Now we’ll move on to our alternate list of Ten Commandments in ch 34. And remember, both the lists of ch 20 & 34 are in Torah, so we are responsible to keep all said in both.
