This week’s readings:
Name of Par’shah- 42.2 Mattot
Par’shah- Numbers 30:1-32:42
Haftara- Jerimayah 1:1-2:3
Brit Chadashah- Matthew 5:33-37; Luke 5:1-11
D’rash: God requires 3 things of us in our service to Him:
availability- Luke 5:1b-2 (ESV) he was standing by the lake of Gennesaret, and he saw two boats by the lake, but the fishermen had gone out of them and were washing their nets.
The boat and the men were there. He knows where we are and our resources.
accessability- Luke 5:3 (ESV) Getting into one of the boats, which was Simon's, he asked him to put out a little from the land. And he sat down and taught the people from the boat.
Being there does no good if we do not allow Him into our boat, a metaphor for our lives.
obedience- Luke 5:4-5 (ESV) And when he had finished speaking, he said to Simon, “Put out into the deep and let down your nets for a catch.” And Simon answered, “Master, we toiled all night and took nothing! But at your word I will let down the nets.”
And none of it does any good unless we do what He calls us to do. All 3 are exemplified here:
Luke 5:10-11 (ESV) and so also were James and John, sons of Zebedee, who were partners with Simon. And Jesus said to Simon, “Do not be afraid; from now on you will be catching men.” And when they had brought their boats to land, they left everything and followed him.
Remember, they had caught enough to fill and almost sink 2 boats! Yet they walked away and left everything to follow Yeshua.
Jeremiah 1:5-6 (ESV) “Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, and before you were born I consecrated you; I appointed you a prophet to the nations.” Then I said, “Ah, Lord God! Behold, I do not know how to speak, for I am only a youth.”
if God calls believe Him and obey. He is our sufficiency.
2 Corinthians 2:16b-17 (ESV) … Who is sufficient for these things? For we are not, like so many, peddlers of God's word, but as men of sincerity, as commissioned by God, in the sight of God we speak in Christ.
Jeremiah 1:15-19 (ESV) For behold, I am calling all the tribes of the kingdoms of the north, declares the Lord, and they shall come, and every one shall set his throne at the entrance of the gates of Jerusalem, against all its walls all around and against all the cities of Judah. And I will declare my judgments against them, for all their evil in forsaking me. They have made offerings to other gods and worshiped the works of their own hands. But you, gird up your loins; arise, and say to them everything that I command you. Do not be dismayed by them, lest I dismay you before them. And I, behold, I make you this day a fortified city, an iron pillar, and bronze walls, against the whole land, against the kings of Judah, its officials, its priests, and the people of the land. They will fight against you, but they shall not prevail against you, for I am with you, declares the Lord, to deliver you.”
To gird up your loins describes an Israelite warrior who would tuck his robes into his belt so as not to trip on them in battle. God was with His servant. We must also become servants who are walls. We are not shifting sands- all others take on this metaphorical role against us! We are walls, which when the wind stops blowing still stands, the sands are drifted at our feet. But we must be willing to speak up, to oppose evil wherever we find it and to tell others God’s truth.
Numbers 30:2 (ESV) If a man vows a vow to the Lord, or swears an oath to bind himself by a pledge, he shall not break his word. He shall do according to all that proceeds out of his mouth.
Ecclesiastes 5:4-5 (ESV) When you vow a vow to God, do not delay paying it, for he has no pleasure in fools. Pay what you vow. 5 It is better that you should not vow than that you should vow and not pay.
Words have power, and God takes our vows seriously. As Meshiachim we have all sworn ourselves to the truth in His word. But these truths are not to be hoarded, rather shared. And whether witnessing to the lost, showing others the errors in their theology, or opposing evil in the political arena we need to be willing and able to stand up for what we know to be true.
Numbers 30:3,5 (ESV) “If a woman vows a vow to the Lord and binds herself by a pledge, while within her father's house in her youth, … 5 But if her father opposes her on the day that he hears of it, no vow of hers, no pledge by which she has bound herself shall stand. And the Lord will forgive her, because her father opposed her.
God recognizes, and indeed establishes authority. He gave the authority to speak to the most powerful men in Judah to Jeremiah:
Jeremiah 1:10 (ESV) See, I have set you this day over nations and over kingdoms,
Even the mighty must shrink before God’s truth when it is proclaimed against them. Certainly we have this authority in every day speech. But I am no orator, and I’ve put politicians to with the truth, to the point they wouldn’t speak more, but skulked out. But there were times I should have spoken up and didn’t, and my silence echoes louder than my words:
Numbers 30:4 (ESV) and her father hears of her vow and of her pledge by which she has bound herself and says nothing to her, then all her vows shall stand, and every pledge by which she has bound herself shall stand.
Intentional or not, what we do not oppose stands, and too often is accepted as truth.
God needs servants willing to take a stand; to oppose wickedness and to share the truth. Many, probably most are willing. But there is a vast gap between willingness and actually doing. Often doing involves loss or even danger, but we must trust that God is on our side and He will strengthen us to the task.
availability- we are here
accesability- we allow the Ruach to enter and teach us, guide us,and strengthen us
obedience- we step out, putting it all on the line, and do as we were told
