Just trying to figure out what exactly was being argued about here
Therefore many from the crowd, when they heard this saying, said, "Truly this is the Prophet." Other's said, "This is the Messiah."
But some said, "Will the Messiah come from Galilee? Has not the scripture said that the Messiah comes from the seed of David and from the town of Bethlehem, where David was." So there was division among the people because of Him.
John 7:49-43
I'm guessing some just didn't know His birthplace, but then there seems to be another argument later on that appears refuted in the scriptures themselves. I'm not getting the whole picture I think. Later on those who would seem to have to have known the scripture add this to the argument
..."Are you also from Galilee? Search and look, for no prophet has arisen out of Galilee."
John 7:52
Meanwhile in Isaiah 9 it says
"By the way of the Jordan, in Galilee of the Gentiles. The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light...
The context of Isaiah 9 seems obviously messianic and about someone coming out of Galilee. I guess I'm confused. I'm wondering what I'm missing that was really being discussed and argued because these people arguing would have to have known the scriptures based on my understanding. Was it being translated and understood differently somehow, maybe even between differing groups at that time?
I just feel like I'm missing something because they should have known this passage and expected someone from Galilee if they understood it the way we do. My assumption is that those talking and arguing knew the scriptures, but that seems to be pretty unarguable based on my understanding of who was arguing it. I'm also only left to assume that some people present discussing and arguing this at the time simply just didn't know where He was born.
