He will be Assyrian:
Micah 5:5-6 (KJV) And this man shall be the peace, when the Assyrian shall come into our land: and when he shall tread in our palaces, then shall we raise against him seven shepherds, and eight principal men. And they shall waste the land of Assyria with the sword, and the land of Nimrod in the entrances thereof: thus shall he deliver us from the Assyrian, when he cometh into our land, and when he treadeth within our borders.
Isaiah 30:31-33 (KJV) For through the voice of the Lord shall the Assyrian be beaten down, which smote with a rod. And in every place where the grounded staff shall pass, which the Lord shall lay upon him, it shall be with tabrets and harps: and in battles of shaking will he fight with it. For Tophet is ordained of old; yea, for the king it is prepared; he hath made it deep and large: the pile thereof is fire and much wood; the breath of the Lord, like a stream of brimstone, doth kindle it.

I agree, simply because it makes sense! The A/C is above all a military man, however diplomatically he makes a peace...presumably to stop the fighting, make a peace by holding out the lure of a Temple to the Israeli's, and gets cozy with everyone.
Daniel said, Daniel 9:26-27 (CJB) 26 Then, after the sixty-two weeks, Mashiach will be cut off and have nothing. The people of a prince yet to come will destroy the city and the sanctuary, but his end will come with a flood, and desolations are decreed until the war is over. 27 He will make a strong covenant with leaders for one week [of years]. For half of the week, he will put a stop to the sacrifice and the grain offering. On the wing of detestable things the desolator will come and continue until the already decreed destruction is poured out on the desolator.” The people that destroyed the 2nd Temple were the Syrian regiments...a hint of what is to come.
Also, Syria is where everything is happening now...everyone is there, trying to maintain just enough peace to get more power over the Middle East. The Americans, Nato, two to three groups of Syrians (it's hard to keep track), the Kurds, the Turks and Russia...and Israel is still next door, attacking when missiles are pointed at Israel. It's probably not Assad, but he certainly is determined to hold onto power, and he is...for a tyrant...quite reasonable. If he falls however...which is likely...someone will rise up in place of him by necessity. Whoever the man is, he certainly needs to have charisma and a sweet tongue to persuade people, even though the Adversary will pave the way in a world sense.
The King of Tyre is also an indicator, and is much mentioned in Isaiah. Tyre is currently Lebanon, but in the past, was a part of Assyria, but is in a peninsula west of current Syria, but was part of Assyria. See the attached map showing all the relevant cities mentioned all over Isaiah:

Putting aside the 2nd question about the mark of the beast, for the first question as to the religion of "the antichrist" the bible says:
Daniel 11:36-39 "He will magnify himself above every god and will say unheard-of-things against the God of gods. .... He will show no regard for the gods of his ancestors ..., nor will he regard any god, but will exalt himself above them all. Instead of them, he will honour Alamahozim "a god of fortresses/forces"; a god unknown to his ancestors he will honour.... He will attack the mightiest fortresses with the help of a foreign god...."
John 5:43 "If another comes in his own name, you will receive him."
2 Thessalonians 2:4 "He will oppose and will exalt himself over everything that is called God or is worshipped, so that he sets himself up in God's temple, proclaiming himself to be God." 2:6-7 The restrainer (Christianity?) will be removed. 2:9 "The coming of the lawless one will be in accordance with how Satan works. He will use all sorts of displays of power through signs and wonders that serve the lie."
Revelation/Apocalypse 13:12-15 "It [the 2nd, Earth Beast] ... made the earth and its inhabitants worship the first beast.... .... Because of the signs it was given power to perform on behalf of the first beast.... It ordered them to set up an image in honour of the beast.... The second beast was given power to give breath to the image of the first beast, ... and cause all who refused to worship the image to be killed." Revelation 17:1-19:3 The great harlot "Babylon" rides the beast. Later the beast will hate the harlot. The harlot seems to be implied to be Rome.

... Later the beast will hate the harlot. The harlot seems to be implied to be Rome. That is the most common interpretation, and I agree. But I like that you said "The harlot seems to be implied to be Rome." I (like you apparently) do not like to make absolute statements concerning eschatology. Prophesies, especially end-times prophecies tend to be vague enough to have more than one valid interpretation. And even when I think I might have one pinned down, that's about the time jimmie will quote some obscure scripture and send my reasoning into a tailspin!
