From Mark:
50: Par’shah Ki Tavo
This week’s readings: Par’shah 50
Date of reading: 1 September 2018/21 Elul 5778
Name of Par’shah: Ki Tavo (When you come)
Par’shah: D’varim 26:1-29:8(9)
Haftara: Yesha’yahu 60:1-22
Brit Chadashah: Mattityahu 13:1-23; Luke 21:1-4; Acts 28:17-31; Romans 11:1-15
D’rash:
D’varim 26:16-19---“Today Adonai your G-d orders you to obey these laws and rulings. Therefore, you are to observe and obey them with all your heart and all your being. You are agreeing today that Adonai is your G-d and that you will follow His ways; observe His laws, mitzvot and rulings; and do what He says. In turn Adonai is agreeing today that you are His own unique treasure, as he promised you; that you are to observe all his mitzvot; and that he will raise you high above all the nations he has made, in praise, reputation and glory; and that, as He said, you will be a holy people for Adonai your G-d.”
Here is the foundation, simply and clearly stated, on how to successfully live a spiritual life in G-d: Begin with a relationship with Him out of love (that is, love him with all your heart and being) and from that flows a pure motive in following His ways. Note how the conditions are positively stated, that, when diligently heeded, blessings will follow. The next two chapters in D’varim, 27 and 28, lists in more detail the negative consequences of disobedience as well as blessings for obedience. These principles are also at work in human institutions, despite the corruption of sin that, at times, taints them: in government, in family, and in the workplace as well as in individual conduct. Though Moshe was addressing Adonai’s instructions to the nation of Israel as a whole, their obedience in these human levels would determine how much blessings they would receive as a nation. All other religions are deviations and corruptions from the ideal that G-d has set forth even though most will adhere to certain laws for the sake of order and civility, such as laws against murder, stealing, lying, etc. Imagine how different the world would be if individuals and nations would heed G-d’s with a heart according to Psalm 19:8(7)-12(11):
The of Adonai is perfect, restoring the inner person. The instruction of Adonai is sure, making wise the thoughtless. The precepts of Adonai are right, rejoicing the heart. The mitzvah of Adonai is pure, enlightening the eyes. The fear of Adonai is clean, enduring forever. The rulings of Adonai are true, they are righteous altogether, more desirable than gold, than much fine gold, also sweeter than honey or drippings from the honeycomb. Through them you servant is warned; in obeying them there is great reward.
But instead, the majority has rejected it, and Acts 28:22b reflects the view taken against the and anything Jewish (this context regards the sect of the Nazerenes who follows Yeshua and continues in ):
“…for all we know about this sect is that people everywhere speak against it.”
Yet the invitation remains for those who choose to be grafted into the cultivated olive tree, that is, into Israel and (Romans 11:16-24) and to refuse this invitation would be the ultimate regret (Mishlei/Proverbs 1:20-33; Luke 14: 16-24). The same instruction applies today as it did when Moshe spoke it to Israel and Yeshua confirmed in the first century (D’varim 6:4-5; Mattityahu 22:37-38; Mark 12:29-30; Luke 10:26-28): (NKJV)---Hear, O Israel: The L-rd our G-d, the L-rd is one! You shall love the L-rd your G-d with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your strength.
May we experience the tremendous blessings of Adonai as we walk in obedience!
