“To the average professed Christian today, living so far below normal, New Testament Christianity would be a shock.” Dr. Vance Havner, Christian pastor and writer of the last century was one of the heralds of Messianic movement, though I doubt he knew it. But being a parsons brat myself in the latter half of that century I can attest that many true pastors were seeing the decline of their faith. They preached against it, but more and more saw the cancer eating away within their own denominations.
“Most church members live so far below the standard, you’d have to backslide to be in fellowship. We are so abnormal that if we were to become normal, people would think we were abnormal.” Vance Havner.
We as Meshiachim are trying to get back to 1st century “New Testament” standards and practices. And to most Christians as well as the world this looks abnormal. So be it. Most people I know try to assign motives to what I do; the most common being I am rebelling against my father, a strict, no-nonsense Southern Baptist pastor. But the truth is I am going where he pointed; back to the roots of our faith.
Now there is no real connection between Christianity and the Nots’rim (early Messianic believers), as the church fathers of the late first century and on have tried to remove Christianity as far from Judaism as they possibly can. And they did a remarkable job of that. However they based their religion on inspired Jewish writings, so the truth is still there for anyone to find.
My father and probably Dr. Havner would disagree with what I am doing. However it was they and men like them who pointed the way for me. They preached against sin which is violation of God’s :
1 John 3:4 (KJV) Whosoever committeth sin transgresseth also the law: for sin is the transgression of the law.
The Greek word there for “law” is “anomia,” in some source documents, and "poeio" in others. Both in Hebrew would be “.” Yet these men also preached that was done away with! And in so doing they dug the grave for their faith. I would contend that the doing away with as the standard of our relationship with Almighty God laid the foundation for a faith that would eventually crumble and fall.
2 Timothy 3:16 (ESV) All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness,
When that was penned there was no New Testament, and the only scriptures the Jews thought of as being “canonized” was in fact ! Canonization was something forced on them when the “Seventy” were made to translate the Septuagint. But in Hebraic thought, all writings are good for instruction as long as they are tried against . If they violate the gold standard of , they are false.
So we as Meshiachim are in going back to the standard set by God Himself in fact going where these Christian men of faith, the pastors who did not sell out pointed us to. My father would say I have backslidden. Fair enough; but I’d say like Dr. Havner that I had to to "backslide to be in fellowship.”
