ם mem sofit
This is the Hebrew letter "mem מ.” It is spelled with open mem מ, and closed mem ם. It is one of five letters in the Hebrew alphabet that takes a final (sofit) form. The letter is written מ when occurring at the beginning or inside a word, but it is written ם (mem sofit ) when it occurs as the last letter of a word. This is sometimes called the open mem מ, because of the small opening at the lower left of the letter. In words where it is the final letter, it is written as a closed mem ם with no opening.
It is said in the Zohar and Talmud: "The letter mem entered (the presence of the creator, ed.) and said: “Master of the world, it would be good for You to create the world by me, for melekh מלך (king) is called by me. The Creator replied: “That is so, but I shall not create the world by you, for the world needs a King. Return to your place.”
The Hebrew letter mem מ is used to show melekh מלך (king) , with open mem. The Hebrew letter mem מ is also used to show the messiah, in Hebrew moshiach משיח, with open mem. The Hebrew letter mem מ is also used to describe water, Hebrew mayim מים (plural), with an open mem and with a closed mem.
There is only one man in the world who said with authority that He is “mayim chayim,” living waters. On the last day of Sukkot, in the Water Ceremony (Nisuch ha’Mayim), Yeshua declared:
Yochanan 7:37-38 (OJB) Now on the last day of the Chag, Hoshana Rabbah, Rebbe, Melech HaMoshiach cried out, saying, If anyone thirsts let him come to me and drink. The one with emunah in me, as the Kitvei Hakodesh said, ‘Out of the midst of him, rivers of MAYIM CHAYYIM (living water)
John 7:37-38 (NASB) Now on the last day, the great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried out, saying, “If anyone is thirsty, let him come to Me and drink [or let him keep coming and drinking]. He who believes in Me, as the Scripture said, ‘From his innermost being will flow rivers of living water.’”
The words ”mem,” מם, and mayim” מים, (“water”), both begin with open mem, מ, and end with closed mem, ם. The sages explain that as this letter mem מם is related to the word moshiach משיח, it called "mem מם" because ha’moshiach משיח will come in two conditions. First, moshiach משיח will come closed, in secret, and second mashiach משיח will come open where many people will know that He is Ha’Moshiach משיח.
This is why there is a closed mem in Yesayahu 9:6, followed by open mem, in the words “l'marbeh l'marbeh לםרבה למרבה.”
Yeshayah 9:6 (5) (OJB) For unto us a yeled (child) is born, unto us ben (son) is given; and the misrah (dominion) shall be upon his shoulder; and Shmo shall be called Peleh (Wonderful), Yoetz (Counsellor), El Gibbor (Mighty G-d), Avi Ad (Possessor of Eternity), Sar Shalom (Prince of Peace).
Yesayahu 9:6 לםרבה למרבה המשרה ולשלום אין-קץ על-כסא דוד ועל-ממלכתו להכין אתה ולסעדה במשפט ובצדקה מעתה ועד-עולם קנאת יהוה צבאות תעשה-זאת
By the rules of Hebrew grammar and spelling, a closed mem is a final mem (mem sofit), and can only be used as the last letter of a word. The above verse is the only place in scripture where it is used as the first letter. There are many such anomalies in the Tenach (Old Testament); and wherever they occur the sages diligently sought out the meaning. (Note: the modern Hebrew alphabet first started to take form about the 2nd cen. BCE, which is whee the "soffit" letters come into use).
The term “l'marbeh l'marbeh לםרבה למרבה” literally “to the increase” denotes a large increase; a distinction that is lost in our English translations. But there are many other connotations here, one of which is explained by the sages as moshiach משיח will first come closed, in secret, then moshiach משיח will come openly. A closed mem is a closed womb; an open mem is the womb opening to give birth (Bahir 84). The sages said that the first time moshiach משיח comes, he will come in closed mem ם, a description of the coming of the moshiach משיח from a closed womb; from a virgin!
Yeshayah 7:14 (OJB) Therefore Hashem Himself shall give you an ot (sign); Hinei, HaAlmah (the unmarried young woman, virgin) shall conceive, and bear Ben (son), and shall call Shmo Immanu El (G-d is with us)
So Isaiah 9:6 is telling us that the son in Isaiah 7:14 is the Messiah! This is why the Ruach HaChodesh inspired Yeshayahu to break the rules of Hebrew grammar and write “l'marbeh l'marbeh לםרבה למרבה.” The lamed ל prefix means "to" or "for." The first letter of the word is them men sofit ם, the closed mem; I.e. the closed womb of a virgin.
Of course contemporary Rabbis do not see HaMoshiach Yeshua in Isaiah’s prophecies, but they are aware of the closed mem in “l'marbeh l'marbeh לםרבה למרבה” and its Messianic portent. “The rabbis teach that when it is time for the Redemption, the closed mem of Isaiah’s l’marbeh will open for the coming of the Messiah” (Radak, Isa. 9:6). Radak is Rabbi David Kimchi, a noted grammarian and scholar. Rabbi Kimchi got the literal meaning correct, but he has missed the true meaning. The child spoken of in this prophecy would be born of the closed womb of a virgin.
And so it happened, the young virgin Miriam מִרְיָם, whose name begins with mem מִ and ends with men sofit ם, gave us a child, Yeshua HaMoshiach (Jesus the Messiah).
