Romans 8:2,"For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Yeshua made me free from the instruction of Sin and Death."
Three things to note here,
If we are "set free" from this instruction (Law), we were once a slave to it.
It involves sin and death.
It is an instruction.
This is the "curse of the " that Paul talks about in Galatians 3:13:"Christ has now redeemed us from the curse of the by His becoming a curse for us, as it is written,'accursed is anyone who is hung on a pole.'" Paul was referencing Deuteronomy 21:23,"...anyone who is hung on a pole is under God’s curse."
God's curse is not a new thing-it is the punishment demanded of us by the of God due to our sin (e.g.,"Cursed is anyone who upholds not the words written in this book of the by carrying them out" (Deuteronomy 27:26).); it is due to our obedience to the instruction of Sin, and while we are under this curse we will taste spiritual death.
When Christ was on the cross, He bore the wrath of God (the metaphorical cup in Matthew 26:39) even though He was sinless. Taking the curse upon Himself, He bore the a punishment equal to sins of us all: the wrath of God that was supposed to fall upon us fell upon Him.
We do not come out of this curse without God's action: He frees us from this curse by His Spirit.
The instruction of Sin and Death is this: while we are under slavery (in bondage) to Sin, our fate is death-the second death (the lake of fire);
We are born into the house of Sin, but are not yet under the penalty of following its instructions (with spiritual death being the penalty) because we haven't yet obeyed it.
We follow the instruction of Sin and we break a commandment of God.
We come under the slavery (bondage) of Sin because of our obedience to its instruction of Sin, and while in this bondage we will die a spiritual death.
At some point we desire a way out of bondage (this desire comes from the Spirit).
Through the instruction of the Spirit of life we are set free from our bondage.
I'm going to make another post soon about why this is an instruction.
