... Familiarity is very difficult to overcome. Like Chava, we can become too familiar and “easy” with God. But the old saying “familiarity breeds contempt” holds true whether speaking of military leadership or of God. Because of familiarity Chava as well as we come to believe we can get away with disobedience. This is why the battle cry of Christianity is “We got grace!”
All the laws of sin and death were simply reiterated to Moshe. They were already in effect before creation, and they are still in effect today! There can be no “grace” without the “law!” Grace is undeserved pardon from sin. Sin is breaking God’s law. So if the law was nailed to the cross, there can be no “dispensation of grace!”
Familiarity- take our parents as an example; we had a sense of familiarity with them. We knew their rules, but we were always testing our limits. Now let's take POW's as an example. When they are told not to cross certain lines or they will get shot, few will test those limits. The guards are foreign, and not generally friendly. My wife, raised as a Jewess, is uneasy with the loose form of familiarity I was brought up with when praying. Christians who believe they are under grace tend to be very familiar with God as the Father, and this I believe is where a lot of the disrespect and disobedience comes from. I frankly think there needs to be a balance, somewhere between the rigidity of some (not all) Jewish sects and the loose familiarity of most (but not all) Christian denominations.
Dispensation of grace- the prevailing theology in contemporary Christianity is "Dispensationalism." According to "Bible Doctrine," an AoG textbook, dispensationalism is defined as: A theological system that began in the nineteenth century with the writings of JN Darby (1800-1882). Among the general doctrines of this system are the distinction between Israel and the church as two groups in God's overall plan, the pretribulational rapture of the church, a future literal fulfillment of Old Testament prophecies concerning Israel, and the dividing of biblical history into seven periods or "dispensations" of God's ways of relating to his people.
The statement "distinction between Israel and the church as two groups in God's overall plan" alludes directly to Replacement Theology. Dispensationists believe them Jews had their shot, and they blew it. Now it's our turn, the age of Gentiles, and God must love us more than you because we got grace! Whatever we do, we're forgiven already because we said "I believe." This of course ignores several of their New Testament scriptures:
Romans 3:1-2 (NASB) Then what advantage has the Jew? Or what is the benefit of circumcision? Great in every respect. First of all, that they were entrusted with the oracles of God.
Mat 12:21(KJV) And in his name shall the Gentiles trust.
Act 3:19 (KJV) Repent ye therefore, and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out, when the times of refreshing shall come from the presence of the Lord;
Just to name a few.
The basis for their system of belief is found in the line "and the dividing of biblical history into seven periods or "dispensations" of God's ways of relating to his people." Dispensationalism interprets history as dividing God’s relations with men into different time periods:
1. Dispensation of Innocence- (Genesis 1:28-30 and 2:15-17)- Adam and Eve in the Garden. Their only instructions were a.) replenish the earth with children, b.) subdue the earth, c.) have dominion over animals, d.) care for the garden, e.) not eat fruit from the Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil.
2. Dispensation of Conscience- from the eviction from the Garden until the flood (Genesis 3:8–8:22). The five major aspects of this dispensation are a.) a curse on the serpent, b.) change in womanhood and childbearing, c.) a curse on nature, d.) imposing difficult work on mankind e.) promise of a Messiah as the seed who will bruise the serpent's head (ha'satan).
3. Dispensation of Human Government- after the flood, God made these promises and commands to Noah and his family: a.) God will not flood the earth again, b.) replenish the earth with people, c.) have dominion over animals, d.allowed to eat meat, e.) law of capital punishment established, f.) sign of God's promise (actually a covenant) is the rainbow.
4. Dispensation of Promise- the call of Abraham through the Exodus. The promise during this dispensation was the Abrahamic Covenant: a.) From Abraham would come a great nation that God would bless, b.) God would make Abraham’s name great, c.) God would bless those that blessed Abraham’s descendants and curse those that cursed them, d.) In Abraham all the families of the earth will be blessed. e.) The sign of the covenant is circumcision. f.) This covenant, which was repeated to Isaac and Jacob, is confined to the Hebrew people and the 12 tribes of Israel.
5. Dispensation of Law- from the Exodus until (they believe) it was suspended after Jesus Christ’s death. This dispensation, with modifications (especially grace), is to continue through the Millennium. Here God deals specifically with the Jewish nation through the Mosaic Covenant, or Law. Because of the people’s disobedience, Israel lost the Promised Land and their status as God's chosen people, which the church now posseses.
6. Dispensation of Grace- began with the New Covenant in Christ’s blood (Luke 22:20). This “Age of Grace” or “Church Age” is between the 69th and 70th week of Daniel 9:24. It starts with the coming of the Spirit at Pentecost and ends with the pre-trib Rapture of the church (1 Thessalonians 4). This dispensation includes everyone, Jew and the Gentile. Our responsibility in the Dispensation of Grace is to believe in Jesus, the Son of God (John 3:18). Now the Holy Spirit indwells believers as the Comforter (John 14:16-26). This dispensation will end with the Rapture of all born-again believers to go to heaven with Christ. Following the Rapture will be the judgments of God lasting for seven years. (note: the judgement, as I understand it, will be the last half of the tribulation; but that's not how "dispies" see it). At any rate, the lucky Gentiles, who only had to believe (but not obey) will be yanked out of here and the Jews get it all back now that things are quite literally being torn apart.
7. Millennial Kingdom of Christ- future and last dispensation, will last for 1,000 years as Christ will rule the earth, fulfilling prophecy that the Jewish nation, believing now in Christ, will will proclaim Him King. Only born-again believers from the Age of Grace and righteous survivors of the seven years of tribulation will enter the Kingdom (which begs the question what to do with all those righteous Jews from the "Old" book; but of course we can't have them there with us). Ha'satan is bound until the end of the 1,000 years. This period ends with the final judgment (Revelation 20:11-14). The world is destroyed by fire, and the New Heaven and New Earth of Revelation 21 and 22 begin.
Again they ignore scripture:
Malachi 3:6a (KJV) For I am the LORD, I change not;
Hebrews 13:8 (NASB) Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever.
So how is it then that He deals differently with Jews and Gentiles? How is it the poor Jews got all those laws Christians find so onerous, but we got an easy one- believe, and everything else is covered by grace?
Matthew 5:17 (ESV) “Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them."
Of course, they have a much different idea of the meaning of fulfill than we do. They think it means to do away with; i.e. abolish it. So they read this as “Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to abolish them." Sure, hat makes sense ... you bet!
Grace- undeserved pardon from sin
Sin- breaking God’s law ”
Therefore there can be no “grace” without the “law!” If nothing to break, there is nothing to pardon and no need for "grace."
So if the law was nailed to the cross, there can be no “dispensation of grace- how can you have a time of forgiving something that is not happening? How can any infractions be happening if there is no requirement not to do something?
They would say that they are just supposed to obey Jesus and Paul and the other apostles. Oh really?
John 14:15 (ESV) “If you love me, you will keep my commandments."
Romans 7:12 (ESV) So the law is holy, and the commandment is holy and righteous and good.
2 Timothy 3:15 (ESV) and how from childhood you have been acquainted with the sacred writings, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus.
The only law they had, and the only scriptures they had were the TNK, the Old Testament. The B'rith Chadashah wouldn't be compiled for another 300 yrs (give or take); and nowhere did either Yeshua or Rav Sha'ul or any other apostle ever say "Just forget about that old book and do what we tell you ... or you could just do what you think we did ... whatever." Further when Yeshua said "keep My commandments" He had not yet been glorified. So ANY statement by Him that was in any way contrary to would have disqualified Him as HaMoshiach!
Matthew 5:18-19 (ESV) For truly, I say to you, until heaven and earth pass away, not an iota, not a dot, will pass from the Law until all is accomplished. Therefore whoever relaxes one of the least of these commandments and teaches others to do the same will be called least in the kingdom of heaven, but whoever does them and teaches them will be called great in the kingdom of heaven.
Luke 16:17 (ESV) But it is easier for heaven and earth to pass away than for one dot of the Law to become void.
Romans 3:31 (ESV) Do we then overthrow the law by this faith? By no means! On the contrary, we uphold the law.
I will tell you that if you are trying to reach someone with this message, don't get discouraged. They have years of learning to twist the Word to suit their own beliefs. They are not only brainwashed and blind to the truth, but they can weave a maze of lies from which it is difficult to extract yourself, or especially them. Hold fast to what you believe, and take it to them. Challenge them, and make them prove what they are saying. Most of the time simply reading a passage in context will show they cannot be correct. So slow things down and make them read to you. Then repeat it, and hammer on it. Just maybe you'll get to see their eyes unglazed a bit and understanding dawn.
