This haftarah actually should start 1 vs earlier at vs 17.
1 Samuel 20:17 (ESV) And Jonathan made David swear again by his love for him, for he loved him as he loved his own soul.
So we are told about Jonathan’s motives for what he does, his love for David, not his wish to secure a dynasty for his family.
1 Samuel 20:23 (ESV) “And as for the matter of which you and I have spoken, behold, the Lord is between you and me forever.”
This is a covenantal statement, using similar language to:
Genesis 31:48-50 (ESV) Laban said, “This heap is a witness between you and me today.” Therefore he named it Galeed, and Mizpah,[watchpost] for he said, “The Lord watch between you and me, when we are out of one another's sight. If you oppress my daughters, or if you take wives besides my daughters, although no one is with us, see, God is witness between you and me.”
1 Samuel 20:26 (ESV) Yet Saul did not say anything that day, for he thought, “Something has happened to him. He is not clean; surely he is not clean.”
Ritual impurity would prevent someone from participating in ritual meals, such as Rosh Chodesh. For men an emission would be the most common cause of impurity. However he could become ritually pure again that evening, according to:
Leviticus 15:16 (ESV) “If a man has an emission of semen, he shall bathe his whole body in water and be unclean until the evening.”
So on the second evening, Saul becomes suspicious and asks about David’s absence.
1 Samuel 20:29 (ESV) He said, ‘Let me go, for our clan holds a sacrifice in the city, and my brother has commanded me to be there. So now, if I have found favor in your eyes, let me get away and see my brothers.’ For this reason he has not come to the king's table.”
David and Jonathan lied to Saul; and it’salways a dangerous thing to lie to the king.
1 Samuel 20:30-31 (ESV) Then Saul's anger was kindled against Jonathan, and he said to him, “You son of a perverse, rebellious woman, do I not know that you have chosen the son of Jesse to your own , and to the of your mother's nakedness? For as long as the son of Jesse lives on the earth, neither you nor your kingdom shall be established. Therefore send and bring him to me, for he shall surely die.”
Clearly Jonathan sides with David. This infuriates Saul, causing him to perversely and vilely rebuke his son. and nakedness denote the genitals, along with their literal meanings. Saul also, in his anger, admits that David is to die.
1 Samuel 20:32-33 (ESV) Then Jonathan answered Saul his father, “Why should he be put to death? What has he done?” But Saul hurled his spear at him to strike him. So Jonathan knew that his father was determined to put David to death.
Saul is unable to answer Jonathan’s questions. David has committed crime worthy of death; so Saul is enraged more and throws his spear at Jonathan. It could be said, as it later was of Judas, ha satan had entered into Saul. Be watchful and do not to give any purchase to demons. And I can attest, anger is the perfect foothold for the enemies minions.
1 Samuel 20:42 (ESV) Then Jonathan said to David, “Go in peace, because we have sworn both of us in the name of the Lord, saying, ‘The Lord shall be between me and you, and between my offspring and your offspring, forever.’” And he rose and departed, and Jonathan went into the city.
Jonathan is concerned about his future offspring.
1 Samuel 20:15 (ESV) and do not cut off [Or but if I die, do not cut off] your steadfast love from my house forever, when the Lord cuts off every one of the enemies of David from the face of the earth.”
It was David’s promise to spare Jonathan’s family that allowed Mephibosheth to live. This in turn set up one of the most touching types of ha Moshiach Yeshua ever recorded (2 Sam 9).
