I was just challenged by some of my AoG friends to prove that scripture says we are to make judgments; so I prepared this for them. Thought I'd post it here:
Dan C
]1 Corinthians 5:11-13 (ESV) But now I am writing to you not to associate with anyone who bears the name of brother if he is guilty of sexual immorality or greed, or is an idolater, reviler, drunkard, or swindler—not even to eat with such a one. For what have I to do with judging outsiders? Is it not those inside the church whom you are to judge? God judges those outside. “Purge the evil person from among you.”
You are commanded to judge those in the church, believers, and expel them if necessary!
The biggest problem is that we’ve been quoted Matthew 7:1 (ESV) “Judge not, that you be not judged” like it stands alone as the 11th commandment. This is absolutely false doctrine and a lie spread by the enemy. Read in context:
Matthew 7:1-5 (ESV) “Judge not, that you be not judged. For with the judgment you pronounce you will be judged, and with the measure you use it will be measured to you. Why do you see the speck that is in your brother's eye, but do not notice the log that is in your own eye? Or how can you say to your brother, ‘Let me take the speck out of your eye,’ when there is the log in your own eye? You hypocrite, first take the log out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to take the speck out of your brother's eye.”
Jesus is saying not to judge falsely, or with too harsh a standard. He is NOT telling us not to make judgments, but to watch how we DO make our judgments! From this I can see a few possibilities: Don’t make judgments about a person's motives or thoughts because we can’t know their mind. Don’t set for them a standard that you yourself cannot keep. And above all, do not make judgments outside of scriptural guidelines!
John 7:24 (ESV) “Do not judge by appearances, but judge with right judgment.” So here we are both told how to judge and told to judge!
As believers with a say in how your church functions, it is your duty to make judgments. Who will be allowed into your fellowship? What standards will apply to all matters concerning the running of your church? What does the Word say, and what does it mean? You must now, having been given the facts perhaps for the first time, make a judgment on what you believe the Bible says about …
wait for it …
