Israel's Memorial Day started at sundown and continues through today, 3 Iyyar. 4 Iyyar is Israel's Independence Day.

The sounding of sirens throughout HaAretz marks the start of Memorial Day on the evening of 3 Iyyar and at 11:00 on the day of 3 Iyyar. Both sirens mark a 2 minute standstill of all activity, and the 11:00 siren marks the start of prayers read at Israel's cemeteries. The national mood is one of rememberance for those who've fallen in military service and to terror attacks. From sunset to sunset, all places of public entertainment are closed.
Israel's Independence day, 4 Iyyar, is much more festive, more like we'd think of a holiday. Joining the two days conveys the message that without the sacrifices of those who've gone before and are currently serving there'd be no Israel. The day (evening) starts with a parade of the flags of the armed forces and a torch lighting ceremony. This day also marks Israel's and the Jewish peoples achievements in all walks of life.
Today more than ever I think it important to mark these two days ourselves and to stand with Israel in their struggle to exist as a nation and as a people. We should openly support their right to exist as a nation, to self determination and self defense. We should stand against her enemies; pray for their repentance and salvation before it is too late and their utter destruction when they act against God's people anywhere in the world. Remember that in this day of international terror, Israel's ongoing battle for independence is our own battle to be free of terror. Her enemies have declared themselves the enemies of freedom and indeed the whole world! Pray for Israel privately and support her openly.
