21. It is a negative commandment not to follow the fixed customs of the heathen.
Va-yikra 18:3 (OJB) After what is done in Eretz Mitzrayim, wherein ye dwelt, shall ye not do; and after what is done in Eretz Canaan, whither I bring you, shall ye not do; neither shall ye walk in their chukkot.
Leveticus 18:3 (CJB) You are not to engage in the activities found in the land of Egypt, where you used to live; and you are not to engage in the activities found in the land of Kena'an, where I am bringing you; nor are you to live by their laws.
One is not to emulate them in any way of dress that is distinctive for them, nor let the locks of the hair grow. Neither is one to shave the hair at the sides, leaving the hair in the middle of the head, which is called a crest, Neither is one to shave the hair in opposition to the face, from ear to ear, leaving a long growth behind him. Whoever does any one of these, or something similar, is to receive whiplashes. If someone is close to the ruling circles of government and he needs to dress in their kind of clothes to emulate them, he is permitted.

Lev 18:3 (YLT)You are not to engage in the activities found in the land of Egypt, where you used to live; and you are not to engage in the activities found in the land of Kena'an, where I am bringing you; nor are you to live by their laws.
It seems to me that this verse deals with far more important customs than dress or haircuts. I agree those are important, just that focusing on those kind of takes the meaning out of the scripture.
So we get: * no sagging * no chains * no hippie hair * no Mohawk's * no lightning bolt razor cuts * etc, etc ...
But what about no Christmas, Easter, Halloween? What about worship as God prescribed instead of how He proscribed? What about our current systematic perversions of justice? What about our loss of a sense of a community with believers?

Growing up, I recall the weekly buzzcuts...when the Beatles were showing off their shining locks. And there was even a dress code at school, while the Christians I occasionally bumped into were in their Sunday Best, when I was wearing jeans.
It would be nice to have a society where looking weird as your statement of personal identity was unacceptable socially, rather than your character and personality, and actions.
Ah well, I can still dream.

Your dress tends to reflect your character, and it would be nice if everyone judged people by their character AND actions AND dress! Character matters as that determines our actions!
