Tonight at sundown we’ll leave the month of Av and the month of Elul will start. A signal event occurred twice dureing the month of Av, both on Tish (the 9th) of Av. First in 586 BC, King Nebuchadnezzar destroyed the Temple and took the Jews captive to Babylon. Again on Tish’b’Av almost 660 yrs later in 70 CE the Romans under Titus destroyed Jerusalem and the Second Temple; putting an end the first Jewish-Roman revolt of 66–73 CE and instigating the present diaspora.
A Third Temple, Ezekiel's Temple (the Beit haMikdash haShlishi), prophesied by Ezekiel as an eternal edifice and permanent dwelling place of the God of Israel before the destruction of the Second Temple will be built. (Eze 40-44) As an end-time prophecy this tells us that the Temple will once again be a part of our lives, and this time permanently!
There are 12 Orthodox organizations in Jerusalem today that are ready for the rebuilding of the Third Temple. Jewish priests have been identified by DNA testing and a Yeshiva set up for their training . Priestly garments have been made and the Temple vessels and furnishings recreated. Red heifers are being bed for the cleansing of those who've come in contact with a corpse, so they may enter the Temple. Most notably the Sanhedrin has been re-instituted. It is my belief (purely speculative) that in one of the wars or intifadas constantly being stirred up and started by Islamists their own rockets will destroy the Al Aqsa and Dome of the Rock Mosques, Israel will seize the opportunity and the land and rebuild the Third Temple to Ezekiel’s specifications.
The First Temple’s destruction was prophesied both by Isaiah and Micah 150 years prior to the event. Isaiah prophesied the Temple would be rebuilt 70 years after its destruction. He even prophesied that King Cyrus of Persia would have it rebuilt well over 200 yrs. before Cyrus was even born! (Isaiah 44:28)
Yeshua Himself prophesied the destruction of the Second Temple (Matthew 24:1-2).
In the lifetime of many today, we’ve seen Israel reborn in a single day when the United Nations voted to charter the Jewish State on May 14, 1948. This recalled the words of Isa 66:8, “Who ever heard of such a thing? Who has ever seen such things? Is a country born in one day? Is a nation brought forth all at once? For as soon as Tziyon went into labor, she brought forth her children.” (also Isaiah 11:11-12, Ezekiel 36:24-28, and Jeremiah 16:14-15).
The first "Temple" was actually the Mishkan (Tabernacle) in the wilderness. Aaron and his sons were established as the priesthood and the types and manner of offerings were instituted at that time. Exodus 29: 34 “So I will consecrate the Tent of Meeting (Mishkan, Tabernacle in the Wilderness) and the altar, and will consecrate Aaron and his sons to serve me as priests. Then I will dwell among the Israelites and be their God.”
As Messianics, we should understand this as part of our Christian heritage. We need to know the central role the Temple is meant to play in our past, present and future history. The Jews long for the Temple to be rebuilt. It is part of the Amidah, the Standing Prayer said 3 times a day by the Orthodox faithful. We too should long for the time that God will dwell with us. Before this many events must take place of course, including the defilement of the Temple, its’ cleansing and the discovery of the Ark of the Covenant. Some believe a fourth Temple must be built: Zechariah 6:13, Ezekiel 38:18-22, Revelation 16:17-21.
The Temple was central to the life and ministry of Yeshua. The firstborn male child in His family, He was taken as an infant to the Temple to be dedicated by Miriam and Yosef (Luke 2:22).
Three times every year Yeshua, as every Observant Jew must, would be at the Temple in Jerusalem: Pesach (Passover), Shavuot (Weeks), and Sukkot (Tents or Booths). Whenever in Jerusalem He would be at the Temple three times a day for prayers.
One year after the festival of Passover, His parents, thinking He was lost, searched for three days before finding Him in the temple courts. He was sitting with, listening to and questioning the teachers there (Luke 2:41).
At age 30, Yeshua proclaimed He is the Messiah and the Son of God. After chasing the money changers out of the Temple, He called it “My Father’s House.”
Yeshua went to the Temple to celebrate Chanukah (the festival of dedication) (John 10:22-23).
During the Water Pouring Ceremony on Sukkot, celebrated at the Temple, Yeshua said, “Everyone who drinks this water will get thirsty again, but whoever drinks the water I will give him will never be thirsty again! On the contrary, the water I give him will become a spring of water inside him, welling up into eternal life!" (John 4:13-14)
Yeshua once said, [/font]“"Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up again." The Judeans said, "It took 46 years to build this Temple, and you're going to raise it in three days?" But the "temple" he had spoken of was his body. (John 2:19-21).” Yeshua was crucified and an earthquake rent the veil in the Temple in two. And Yeshua was of course raised in three days! Allelu'yah!
So the Temple was from the beginning to present central to the lives of Jews, especially to the life of Yeshua. And if we are to have part in the blessings of Yisra’el in the future it will be central to our lives as well.
