When asked by what authority do you teach, or speaking of the authority with which you speak, Biblically this refers to who you study/studied under. A surface reading (mainC style) might lead us to say Yeshua spoke with the authority of God, who He was. And this may be; however more accurately in this context the answer would be Rav Hillel.
Whenever I "speak" here these days, there is almost certainly a lot of the teachings of Rabbi Stanley of Synagogue Beit Aveinu. So, other than God/the Bible, under what authority do you "speak" here? Who or what is your major influence or teacher?
No wrong answers, and no one is better than another- just luckier if we have a teacher is all. I thank God and pray for my teacher continually! And I pray also that his teaching may through me in some small way bless everyone here.
And when you think of it we do teach each other.
Dan C
Edit: And no, we don't (except R. Reuel) have any "authority", except I trust you all more than the rest of the net because you at least strive for the truth.

Luke 20:3 And he answered and said unto them, I will also ask you one thing; and answer me: 4 The baptism of John, was it from heaven, or of men?
The context seems to be drawing a distinctions between the doctrines from God or from man.
I cor 3:4 For while one saith, I am of Paul; and another, I am of Apollos; are ye not carnal? 5 Who then is Paul, and who is Apollos, but ministers by whom ye believed, even as the Lord gave to every man? 6 I have planted, Apollos watered; but God gave the increase. 7 So then neither is he that planteth any thing, neither he that watereth; but God that giveth the increase.
Ps 119:99 I have more understanding than all my teachers: for thy testimonies are my meditation.

So, are you saying the question didn't mean who was His teacher? I take it to mean Yeshua was telling everyone He did these things at the direction of the Ruach. Others get/got the point, but of course they were confused, partly because their mindset was on the original question, (paraphrased) "Who is your earthly teacher?"

Dan C I think that Yehoshua was speaking of the Ruach also. The answer was directed to the original question about the authority to baptize that John received, John having been filled with the Ruach from the womb. They were just as scared of John the Immerser possibly being Mashiach as well.
