CJB – The Messiah redeemed us from the curse pronounced in the
by becoming cursed on our behalf; for the Tanakh says, "Everyone who hangs from a stake comes under a curse."
ESV - Christ redeemed us from the curse of the law by becoming a curse for us--for it is written, "Cursed is everyone who is hanged on a tree"—
KJV - Christ hath redeemed us from the curse of the law, being made a curse for us: for it is written , Cursed is every one that hangeth on a tree:
YLT - Christ did redeem us from the curse of the law, having become for us a curse, for it hath been written, `Cursed is every one who is hanging on a tree,'
So, just what is this “Curse of the law”? Did Christ really become cursed for us?
Deu 27: 26 "'A curse on anyone who does not confirm the words of this by putting them into practice.'All the people are to say, 'Amen!'
The curse is said here to be when we do not “do”, or obey the law.
Deu 21: 18 "If a man has a stubborn, rebellious son who will not obey what his father or mother says, and even after they discipline him he still refuses to pay attention to them; 19 then his father and mother are to take hold of him and bring him out to the leaders of his town, at the gate of that place, 20 and say to the leaders of his town, 'This son of ours is stubborn and rebellious, he doesn't pay attention to us, lives wildly, gets drunk.' 21 Then all the men of his town are to stone him to death; in this way you will put an end to such wickedness among you, and all Isra'el will hear about it and be afraid. 22 "If someone has committed a capital crime and is put to death, then hung on a tree, 23 his body is not to remain all night on the tree, but you must bury him the same day, because a person who has been hanged has been cursed by God -so that you will not defile your land, which ADONAI your God is giving you to inherit.
H7045 קללה qelâlâh kel-aw-law' From H7043; vilification: - (ac-) curse (-d, -ing).
The Hebrew term connotes a little bit different meaning than we get from the English word “cursed.” He was “vilified”- sounds more like just found guilty than actually under a “curse” from God. It connotes judgment, which we all will face! To me it means the person hanging there is facing God’s judgment, which is truly just. A man may be falsely accused and convicted by other men. But just because men hang you on a tree doesn’t mean God will find you guilty as well, and thus bring you under the “curse” of the law!
So was Yeshua, in whom no guilt was found, under a curse?
1 Peter 2:22 "He committed no sin, nor was any deceit found on his lips."
And notice the reason for removing the body so it doesn’t hang all night, “so that you will not defile your land.” How would this defile the land?
Personal opinion- it has as much to do with the attitudes of the inhabitants as it does the spiritual defilement. Certainly a dead body hanging in the darkness would attract demonic forces. However this, coupled with people waking to the sight of a body on display would affect the way people think. Hanging a person for a short time is an object lesson. Leaving the body there is an act of contempt, which is the lesson learned from such an act.
The “curse of the law” is when we refuse to obey the law, and thus bring ourselves under God’s perfect judgment. The “curse of the law” is to be found guilty of not doing the law. Grace is for those who repent when they transgress the law- even the mainC folks will agree to that. Why then do they refuse to do as the “law”, which is, says? By clinging to grace as though it was a “get off the tree free card” they risk placing themselves under the curse- they risk being vilified before God, found guilty in a court from which there is no appeal.
