Exodus 20:1-6 (CJB) 1 Then God said all these words: 2 א 2 “I am Adonai your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the abode of slavery. 3 ב 3 “You are to have no other gods before me. 4 You are not to make for yourselves a carved image or any kind of representation of anything in heaven above, on the earth beneath or in the water below the shoreline. 5 You are not to bow down to them or serve them; for I, Adonai your God, am a jealous God, punishing the children for the sins of the parents to the third and fourth generation of those who hate me, 6 but displaying grace to the thousandth generation of those who love me and obey my mitzvot.
Who are the other gods? Are these Principalities and Powers that exist under YHVH? Are they Angels, Bright or Dark, that are the Son's of YHVH?

Hi Questor, That is a very good question. My thinking is that "You are to have no other gods before me." Exodus 20:3 is referring to the idols that the pagans were worshipping. Now when there is an idol that is being worshipped I believe that there is a demon attached to each one. So in this case demons are part of the powers of the air, principalities, etc. I also believe that when one worships an idol that has a demon attached to it that the demon would also come upon the person and influence them or it will open a door to demonic attacks and also to invite other demons into your home and life. I am reminded of Ephesians 6:12 "For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this age, against spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places." God never commanded us or His people to worship the spirit realm. This includes God's angels and Satan and demons. We are always in a constant battle with the demonic realm. Thus we need to have the armor of God on, However to say there are many believers who are doing battle without the armor of God. They are naked before the enemy and thus they succumb to attack. So in my thinking the powers of the air and principalities are the heavenly realms and the demonic realms. I would explain further however I need to go for a few hours. Hopefully I will be on later. Other gods are anything or even any idea that we worship. We may claim and believe we worship the true God but if we worship anything else at the same time we are breaking the commandment. We may worship people, money, power, prestige, respect, or even tradition.
Deuteronomy 4:2 Ye shall not add unto the word which I command you, neither shall ye diminish ought from it, that ye may keep the commandments of the LORD your God which I command you.

Yes that is part of it however I believe that Questor's questions was referring to the spirit realm.
Yet, now that I think of it the worshipping of ourselves, money, people, material things are affected by the spirit realm or demonic realm which is the powers and principalities of the air. So yes. I can rest on that one.
For me I go much deeper than that and relate it all to the spirit realm of worshipping idols and all that pertains to it.
I know that many believers do not want to talk about the spirit realm for several reasons. One they feel that they are giving Satan glory. The other reasons is that it scares them or they don't understand it or how it works. No one really is going to know how it works. Only God knows how it works and He desires that we do not worship the spirit realm, just Him and Him only.
Others believe that the spirit realm does not exist. I know that it exists. I have seen thing and heard things that would baffle anyone's mind. Some things I saw that I have no explanation for to this very day. The powers of the air and principalities do exists rather we want to believe it or not or accept it or not.
I will leave it at that.

In the it specifically states, Exodus 20:2-3 (CJB) 2 א 2 “I am Adonai your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the abode of slavery. 3 ב 3 “You are to have no other gods before me. I am asking, what gods is YHVH speaking of. We are to put YHVH above all other gods...and idols, as well, anything that gets in our way of connecting with YHVH heart to heart.
Yeshua could be likened unto one of these gods...a principality, a power, seperated out by YHVH from Himself to act alone, and have a being-ness...in Yeshua's case a human identity.
Michael and Gabriel are known entities with power, and personal presence of some kind. We know there are other angels, yet no one discusses them, or even what we can learn from their behavior.
And what of the Adversary? A person...? Certainly a power.
What are the ways in which he acts, that we can determine from the scriptures? How can we best fight him, and his attacks upon us?

In my thinking the powers of the air and the principalities are the spirit realm or spirit world. God's angels, Satan and his demons.
The bible tells us what they are and how to deal with them. One is putting on the full armor of God, resist the devil and he will flee from you, not partake of sins or idol worship and not giving in to temptation to sin.
We are not to worship the powers of the air or the principalities.
Yeshua is God in the flesh, not part of the powers of the air or principalities. Yeshua is above that. He made Himself equal with God, higher then man and the angels of God.

Satan's character and actions are to steal, kill, destroy. He is the father of lies, there is no truth found in him. He roams the earth seeking whom he may devour. He counterfeits what is of God. He comes as an angel of light as well as his demons.
We are to discern and to ask for the gift of discerning of spirits. We are to be grounded in the word of God so that when Satan comes with a lie we will know that lie from the truth. To expose the lies of the enemy. To reveal the truth of God. To put on the armor of God. To talk of the blood of Christ. And to remind Satan of the last days when he will be cast into the Lake of Fire for eternity.
To not give in to him, to resist him. To flee from him.
When one gives in to Satan and his lies, then this becomes idol worship.

Thank you, Moriah Ruth.
I am also looking for how we are to resist the Evil one.
The adversary is good at slipping thoughts into our minds to lead us astray. Sh'aul wrote to these matters, on taking every thought captive to the mind of Messiah. The difficulty to me, is that Sh'aul did not seem to pass down the ways of doing this.
I of course, can only think to replace the evil or provocative thought with better ones, but surely this cannot be all.
Any thoughts?

The adversary, ha satan, is spoken of as a very real and powerful being all through scripture; as are lesser spirits who do evil. I take this very seriously.
1 Peter 5:8 ESV “Be sober-minded; be watchful. Your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour.”
This is how we are to resist. Know your enemy, know yourself, be on your guard against him and resist. When you fail, repent, and resist some more. Any trainer from sports to military will agree that in a crises, you'll react exactly as you've trained. Practice ...
1 John 4:1-3 ESV “Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God, for many false prophets have gone out into the world. By this you know the Spirit of God: every spirit that confesses that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is from God, and every spirit that does not confess Jesus is not from God. This is the spirit of the antichrist, which you heard was coming and now is in the world already.”
Again, practice ... pray for discernment, and test the spirits against scripture to know who they are.
2 Timothy 3:16-17 ESV “All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, that the man of God may be competent, equipped for every good work.”
And this would be our training manual. Get in the Word; test the Word; live by the Word ... practice the Word. Obedience- the word the Word points to for Messianics. We practice obedience. This more than anything sets us apart and prepares us.
Romans 6:16 "Do you not know that if you present yourselves to anyone as obedient slaves, you are slaves of the one whom you obey, either of sin, which leads to death, or of obedience, which leads to righteousness?"
Dan C

I believe God (Father, Son, and Holy Spirit) specifies clearly how we are to resist. Following His guidance in complete obedience is a discipline that will strengthen us against evil. I also believe the Bible is clear that the downfall of Satan, the core of sin, is pride. Therefore humility, which is also strengthened by obedience, submitting to all that God has specified, is how we resist. The grace and power of God gives us the strength to resist. When we trust and obey, He will bring us through the current trial of evil and return us to glory with Him.

Good answers Alon and Frank.
Also one needs to be grounded in the word of God so when Satan comes with his lies we are to recognize that lie and defeat him with the word of God. I did answer you question Questor.
Resist the devil Keep oneself humble (as Frank had shared) Study to show oneself approved unto God. Resist temptation. Know the enemies strategies (such as his lies, counterfeits, etc.)
And as Frank states the bible is very clear on how to overcome the enemy, powers of the air, principalities.
I thought that Paul was very clear on this as well as Peter, James, 1,2 and 3 John. Yeshua Himself even told us how to resist him and what to look out for.

Nice answers, guys, and very helpful, but you forgot three additional things that we must do.
We must also worship YHVH in defiance of the Adversary, particularly when under attack; and we must be in continual thanksgiving to YHVH for sending Yeshua, and thanksgiving to Yeshua for our righteousness in Him. Both of these things are instant antidotes to the poison that the Adversary puts in our minds.
And if you are without ideas, and think you have done all, speaking in Tongues can do a world of good.
What is interesting is just how well the Adversary lies to us, and makes us believe that we are helpless, when we have been well equipped.
So, the full list of our warfare against the Adversary is:
Putting on the full armor of God
Ephesians 6:14-18 (NKJV)
14 Stand therefore, having girded your waist with truth, having put on the breastplate of righteousness,
15 and having shod your feet with the preparation of the gospel of peace;
16 above all, taking the shield of faith with which you will be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked one.
17 And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God;
18 praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, being watchful to this end with all perseverance and supplication for all the saints--
Resist the devil and he will flee from you,
Do not partake of sins or idol worship
Do not giving in to temptation to sin.
Do not worship the powers of the air or the principalities.
Discern and ask for the gift of discerning of spirits.
Know your enemy, know yourself, be on your guard against him and resist.
When you fail, repent, and resist some more. Practice ...

Blessings to all of you for your help. I have been under much attack lately, and this will be a good reminder to place in my journal.

Does this work best if you speak "Hellbrew?" :(Or maybe speak the Geek language. Or type a hot memo to 'em in Hellvenic type font! My personal best tactic is to collapse and say something like "b'dee-b'dee-b'duu-up-mmm da-da-da-dare" while pointing upward. They leave me alone 'cause they don't want to have to listen to me scream continuously if they mess with me too much ... Dan C p.s. sorry, but with relations rapidly deteriorating at the AoG where my wife still goes, I got all these TOOOUUNNGZZZ jokes and nowhere to unload em. I do at times allow the Ruach to speak for me if I am having trouble remembering details or just stuck. There's never any "tounges" involved, although sometimes right in the middle I get clarity on what to say and just jump right back in. I did pray some in Hebrew at our men's group, and the ones that weren't accusing me of Judaizing did light heartedly accuse me of speaking in tongues.
