I took the time to read Proverbs 28 that someone had shared in the Shout Box. Very good chapter to really meditate upon. There were a few verses that had my attention. One in particular.
"He that turneth away his ear from hearing the law, even his prayer shall be abomination." Proverbs 28:9
This is in my thinking something to take notice of. I think this would include being obedient to the law, not just hearing it. I would not want my prayers to be closed off from God because I chose not to listen or obey the law. Could this be why many people, Christians and others do not have their prayers answered or even their needs met because they CHOOSE not to listen or obey?
I would begin to think so.

Moriah Ruth I think you are correct. Hearing implies doing, biblically speaking. Ya'aqob(James) 1:22 Don't deceive yourselves by only hearing what the Word says, but do it! I do believe that for those of us who are truly hearing and/or reading the Word, trying to understand and to then follow; for us I believe God extends grace when we do not yet know, and imparts wisdom to help us along. He answers our prayers, such as my wife showing some signs of softening towards "my little mishigas" ... (she does still think I am crazy ) I do not know how "closed off" the prayers of someone who refuses to take the instructions (law) in seriously are. But for me, refusal to obey would definitely and noticeably separate me from God. In that conditions, I doubt I can pray effectively. Dan C

Yes Alon, I agree with you. The verse that you shared also came to mind. However, I think we should use the whole context of the rest of the verses before and after. "But be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves. For if any be a hearer of the word, and not a doer, he is like unto a man beholding his natural face in a glass: For he beholdeth himself, and goeth his way , and straightway forgetteth what manner of man he was . But whoso looketh into the perfect law of liberty, and continueth therein, he being not a forgetful hearer, but a doer of the work, this man shall be blessed in his deed.James 1:22-25 When I also read this I would think the Word of God would also imply LAW, God laws. So if one were to read it like this, "But be ye doers of the LAW, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves. For if any be a hearer of the LAW, and not a doer, he is like unto a man beholding his natural face in a glass: For he beholdeth himself, and goeth his way , and straightway forgetteth what manner of man he was . 25 But whoso looketh into the perfect law of liberty, and continueth therein, he being not a forgetful hearer, but a doer of the work, this man shall be blessed in his deed." James 1:22-25. I do notice that some of you use the Complete Jewish bible. So I will I include verse here also. "Don't deceive yourselves by only hearing what the Word says, but do it! For whoever hears the Word but doesn't do what it says is like someone who looks at his face in a mirror, who looks at himself, goes away and immediately forgets what he looks like. But if a person looks closely into the perfect , which gives freedom, and continues, becoming not a forgetful hearer but a doer of the work it requires, then he will be blessed in what he does. So in my thinking not only would it be toward all of God's word, but it would also apply to all of God's laws. Moriah Ruth

Moriah Ruth I like this one also:
Proverbs 28:18 (KJV) 18 Whoso walketh uprightly shall be saved: but he that is perverse in his ways shall fall at once.

I am certain God hears all His children.
However, I believe the greatest source of His help for us is the influence of the Holy Spirit. Our obedience to His Law, as best we understand and follow, opens us to greater sensitivity to the Holy Spirit. We benefit from this influence.
Also, those who follow His Will are immediately blessed by other benefits of obedience. I believe that even those who disobey in ignorance suffer the consequences. I am thinking in particular of the immediate healthful benefits of abstaining from blood, fat, and unclean meat as an example. I am sure you can think of other examples.
