Once there were two Jews. One was short and wider than most while the other was tall and skinnier than most. The taller Jew asked the shorter Jew to Shabbat dinner. Three knocks on the door and the shorter Jew stood with his shorter and wider than average family in the doorway. They tried to kiss the Mezuzah but it was too high for them to reach. The taller Jew thinking quickly grabbed a stool to accompany the issue at hand. Once inside the home with taller than average doorways, the much shorter and wider family felt like they had entered a castle. When it came time to light the Shabbat candles the shorter and wider family had trouble seeing the top of the table, much less getting into the tall chairs. After the Blessings were said and the songs were sang the family shared a wonderful meal together with joy along with kiddush wine. The next day after Havdalah the short and wider Jew invited the taller and skinnier Jew to Shabbat dinner next week. The sun was heading down in the sky, the Taller and skinnier than average family started walking towards the shorter and wider Jews home. They came to a shorter than average doorway. Each one of the taller Jews children had to lean over just to fit through the door. The shorter and wider than average family smiled at their guest who looked like giants within their short ceiling home. The chairs were too short to sit in and the table was too close to the ground.
“We shall eat! Lounging like on Passover” said the taller Jew. The family did the Hamotzi followed by the breaking of the Challah bread. There were two larger than average Challah loaves. They enjoyed the Shabbat dinner shared among friends but since neither house worked well to get together within the families never broke bread together, never sang together nor did they have Shabbat Dinner with each other again.
The two types of Jews represent man’s way of changing the to be modeled after themselves rather than letting the mold them. What seemed comfortable to one Jew was only a false comfort based on what that Jew had molded the into being. What was left in the end was destroyed friendship because neither was comfortable outside of their own religious circle. But our story does not end there. Years later came a third Jew who didn’t care whether people thought of him as tall, short, big, wide or small he loved with all his heart. He heard of the other two Jews and their problem.
He asked for the two families to set aside their differences and come to a Shabbat Dinner that he would setup for all the families who wanted to attend. Jews from all walks of life were invited to the feast.
When they came to the man’s house they noticed he had tables large and small for all sizes and shapes of Jews. He smiled as he greeted them at the tables all setup with fine white linen and covered with the finest of foods. The tables were not within a home but rather set outside in the courtyard. It did not matter if they were tall or short, wide or small because after the meal they all left the same as their fellow Jews. The third Jew represents Mashiach who will remove false doctrine and division among us and bring us to a feast where we all get fat on the wisdom from the living .
