In Matt 3:16 (KJV) we read "and, lo , the heavens were opened unto him, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove, and lighting upon him."
Apparently the dove is a pagan symbol, sacred to Zeus. The idea of God taking the form of a dove was introduced about the 5th Cen CE. This is when it started to show in paintings and mosaics.
Prior to this, the term was understood to mean "in the manner of a dove," or "as a dove would." Usually the Ruach Ha Chodesh is depicted by supernatural fire and/or smoke.
Do any of you have any other information on this? Corrections?

And while He was praying, heaven was opened and the Ruach ha-Kodesh came down upon Him in bodily form like a dove. And from out of heaven came a voice, 'You are My Son, whom I love--with You I am well pleased!'" (TLV). The Holy Spirit not only descended like a dove but also was in bodily form like a dove. As for any paganism with doves, we should remember that doves were suitable for sacrifice (John 2:14-16) and that Yeshua told His talmidim to be "innocent as doves" (Matthew 10:16 TLV). Though Zeus was well-known in the Messiah's day, doves still symbolized innocence and harmlessness. Zeus, I'm sure you know, was only a myth. Just as Greeks couldn't make pigs clean by sacrificing them, they couldn't make doves unclean by making up myths about them.

Dan, have you considered Luke 3:21-22? It says, "... Yeshua also was immersed. And while He was praying, heaven was opened and the Ruach ha-Kodesh came down upon Him in bodily form like a dove. ... The Holy Spirit not only descended like a dove but also was in bodily form like a dove. Yes, Luke is the only gospel which says "in bodily form." Looking it up in my Strong's (nos. 4984 & 1491, keyed to the NAS) the literal translation of Luke's account is "having corporeal appearance like a dove." That still leaves a little (though admittedly not much) room for interpretation/misinterpretation. Now, if it had first been translated from Hebrew to Greek ... Excellent points (although I think the point of sacrificing a pig was to insult the Hebrews). And there is the fact that ha satan copies what God does, especially in mythology. Mythology is the bible of paganism, authored by the enemy for the purpose of insulting God and confusing His people. Which is why I asked about this one. I heard this from a Jewish/Nazarim rabbi. But I want to be sure before I go scratching notes in the margins of my Bible. Thanks for the input. Dan C
