Developing questions as I am studying... 1: (a little sarcasm) "why are you looking at each other". The boys lack self direction on there own.. 4-5: the 'bounce' between identifying 'Jacob' and 'Israel'. Continues not sure the significant of this.. When avram name change seems to always call him Avraham after the name change.. So there is a difference going on here.. 6-14. 3 times "you are spies" ( I do not understand the intimidation, the accusing, threatening..) 16: one must go and get youngest (changes mind later and keeps Simeon (( one )) and let's others go). 17: Imprisoned all for three days...( is there some vengeance going on) 18: Joseph acknowledges Elohim as G-D, holds onto G-D of his father this whole time.. 19:( change of thought ) one brother to stay, the rest go.. (Hostage situation!) 21: crimes of the past, still haunting them. 22: Rueben' I told you so' guy (speculation that this has been his personality type) 28: did not return to joseph when they realize they have money! (observation) 37: Rueben offers his own two sons to take Benjamin to Egypt. 38: "my son will not go down!". Sacrificing Simeon who has been left behind??
These are some of my observations that also pose some question for understanding.
Thanks Dave

Not really sure what you're getting at here. If you want to discuss these, maybe it would be best to take them one at a time, give a little more information and ask questions or ask for discussion.

I have been meditating on your many thoughts and alon is correct that it would be easier to deal with one at a time.
1: I suspect this is an idiom and should not be too heavily interpreted according to the English translation.
4-5: I have not considered every time this occurs but in this case it seems clear Jacob refers specifically to the person and Israel refers to his clan by a more formal/generic/specific designation. The children of Abraham are often called Hebrews which appears to be a play on words for how he is described just like Israel.

let me back up a bit and say that a couple of months ago, I began to read the scriptures with with a pad of paper and pen. and would write down anything that seem to raise a question, seem different, if it seem to be in different context then previous ect... so for me to start on chapter 42 is really late for the questions,, I have questions from chapter 1!!! but thought that i would start from where I was at at the time.. Thinking if it is a question for me is it a question for someone else as well!!! ;D So down the path I go...

I can see that a bit, and just kinda wondering if I am missing something... I continued the thread of ISRAEL to look up the frequency and after he dies repeatedly it refers to the "children of Israel" with a few exceptions to the "elders of Israel" Thinking that "children" for the state that they are in regarding growth and dependence. ( still mulling this over)
