One of the things that I'm working on in our community is trying to help those coming from the gentile Church see the beauty and value of the Messianic Liturgy, as taken out of the Jewish Synagogue. I've been writing a paper each week on different prayers and thought some of you might be interested in what I've shared thus far. I'll start posting them in this area, as I go along, hoping that these generate some response of praise to Adonai our God, or stimulate questions on the Judaic perspective of our faith.
Kibbutz Galuyot
"Sound the great horn for our freedom and raise a banner to gather our exiles and to unite us together from the four corners of the earth. Blessed are You, Adonai, who regathers the scattered of His people Israel."
The Shofar, or Ram’s Horn trumpet, is of a tremendous significance to the Jewish people. It is the sound of warning, that enemies are approaching. It is the sound of victory, that the battle has been won. It is the sound that precedes Adonai’s judgment. It is the sound that initiates God’s Jubilee of freedom.
The specific prayer of the Kibbutz Galuyot (or the regathering from the nations) comes from the Prophet Isaiah:
And it shall come to pass in that day, that the great trumpet shall be blown, and they shall come which were ready to perish in the land of Assyria, and the outcasts in the land of Egypt, and shall worship the LORD in the holy mount at Jerusalem.
(Isaiah 27:13)
The significance of this trumpet call is spoken of specifically in the New Testament.
And then shall appear the sign of the Son of man in heaven: and then shall all the tribes of the earth mourn, and they shall see the Son of man coming in the clouds of heaven with power and great glory. And he shall send his angels with a great sound of a trumpet, and they shall gather together his elect from the four winds, from one end of heaven to the other.
(Matthew 24:30-31)
For the Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God: and the dead in Christ shall rise first….
(1 Thessalonians 4:16)
There is a sharp condemnations by the prophet Ezekiel (33:4), that if one heeds not the warning of the trumpet blast, his blood is on his own head. It is a relevant question, as we see the days approaching, "Are we listening?" It is important to understand the context and the reason for the blast when it comes. Is He sounding a sound of warning or a sound of victory? We must know where the battler is raging to understand. The Kibbutz Galuyot opens a whole host of questions, as we appeal to Adonai to sound His great shofar. We are calling for His return. The Shofar may yet sound many times before that final victory is declared. May we be found ready.
