Sihon means "the tempestuous one" or "the hot-head". One often wonders, when reading through these passages which came first, the name or the definition. Does Sihon mean such because he was this way or was it given to him with the meaning already. I often wonder about what prophetic nature the names we give our children has, haven had more than a little experience with the practice. When we name our children, are we blessing them or cursing them, and will their name become the characteristic of their behavior?
The Amorites were probably a loose association of several small tribal groups. Whether Sihon was supreme over these groups or one of the many lesser representatives is unknown. Historians mostly believe the latter, as the entirety of the Amorite nation would have been an overwhelming opponent and Israel's victory over such would have sent shock-waves through the region. They were best described as "mountaineers" or hill-people, not at all unlike the Irish highlanders in their political clan-like relationships.
