One of the things that I'm working on in our community is trying to help those coming from the gentile Church see the beauty and value of the Messianic Liturgy, as taken out of the Jewish Synagogue. I've been writing a paper each week on different prayers and thought some of you might be interested in what I've shared thus far. I'll start posting them in this area, as I go along, hoping that these generate some response of praise to Adonai our God, or stimulate questions on the Judaic perspective of our faith.
Da’at
"You show favor to a man of knowledge, and You teach understanding to a mortal man. Be gracious to us; a mind of understanding and intellect is from You. Blessed are You, Adonai, who favors us with knowledge."
It is so often taken for granted that knowledge and understanding come from Adonai. Yet, the writers of the Proverbs take care to make this a central theme to their collection. More than 20 times, in 31 short chapters are we told that knowledge comes from Adonai. This is a commentary on the theological position of man today. Repeatedly and consistently, we are reminded of man’s wisdom. When the Word of Adonai lines up with the conclusions of man it is regarded as a foundational truth, where the wisdom of Adonai is defended and supported. Yet, where man’s conclusions have dissented from the Bible, it is universally dismissed.
There is a way which seems right unto a man, but the end thereof are the ways of death.
(Pro 14:12 KJV)
Occasionally, I am called by someone with exciting news for me, that science has proven that the was true (usually with regard to the health benefit of a kosher diet). My response is less than enthusiastic. "Why didn’t you believe God in the first place? If science did not endorse the position of the Bible, who would you have believed?"
Adonai has given to us a mind and endued us with knowledge. This is a great and foundational truth that all mankind, who accepts the reality of God, will confirm. Yet, it is a half-truth.
For God giveth to a man that is good in his sight wisdom, and knowledge, and joy: but to the sinner he giveth travail, to gather and to heap up, that he may give to him that is good before God. This also is vanity and vexation of spirit.
(Ecc 2:26 KJV)
How do we know what we know? Is truth simply that which our experiences will confirm? Is it that which science and technology have verified? Peruse through a fifty year old science text book sometime if that is where you place your confidence.
When we pray the Da’at, we confirm for ourselves that knowledge and understanding come from Adonai. It is not a blind faith; but a confidence that has been consistently re-affirmed for thousands of years. Where science and modern positions have swayed is a demonstration that they simply don’t yet have all the facts (or have not put them together rationally). Adonai, our God, has the whole story. He offers to us His wisdom, and understanding and knowledge.
"Lord, teach us Your way."
