Blessing on the
"Blessed are You, Adonai our God, King of the universe, who has chosen us from all peoples and given us His , blessed are You, Adonai, Giver of the ."
"What advantage then hath the Jew? or what profit is there of circumcision? Much every way: chiefly, because that unto them were committed the oracles of God."
(Romans 3:1-2)
It is fascinating how the Jewish liturgy and New Testament doctrines overlap, much to the chagrin of Christian scholars. They have an answer for this, though. The Jews HAD the oracles of God; but they blew it when they did not accept Messiah. Don’t believe it. It’s amazing how we subtly change the words of the text in order to support our own position. Paul’s question is, what advantage IS there to be a Jew currently: HATH not HAD. The condition of the word "hath" commands the interpretation of the word "were": not "were once" but "have been". "What advantage then HAS the Jew currently? or what profit is there of circumcision? Much every way: chiefly, because that unto them HAVE BEEN committed the oracles of God." Makes all the difference in the world doesn’t it?
Another one of my favorites is Romans 1:16.
For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek.
(Romans 1:16)
This is re-interpreted, "to the Jew first; but now to the Greek." The word "first" can be either positional or ordinal (in sequence). The Christian defines it in this case, in sequence; yet, the word "also" doesn’t allow this. If "first" were sequential, then "also" would have been "now". Salvation is given to the Jew PRIMARILY; but equally welcomed is the Greek.
This echoes what our Messiah said to the Samaritan woman in John 4:22.
Ye worship ye know not what: we know what we worship: for salvation is of the Jews.
Christian teaching has replaced the Hebraic, Jewish interpretation with Catholicism. "We, the gentile Church, are now the possessors of the oracles of God." Is this because we have the Holy Spirit? Well, we have some kind of spirit anyway. We are not God’s people simply because we say it is so. We are God’s people because He has chosen us. Scripture is clear in the definition of who is this chosen people… and it’s not the gentile or anyone who denies the significant relationship He shares, today, with this people, Israel.
In this blessing, we identify with the Jewishness of our faith. If it were not so, then we would be listless in our arrogance of demanding to be acknowledged as that which we are not.
