Adone Olam
"Master of the universe who reigned before any form was created, when creation came about according to His will, then as King was His name proclaimed to be.
And after all has ceased to be, He alone will reign in Awesomeness. And He was, and He is, and He is to come eternally in splendor.
And He is first, and there is no second to compare to Him, to be His equal, without beginning and without end, His is the power and dominion.
And He is my God, my Living Redeemer, and the Rock of my pain in times of trouble, and He is my Banner and a refuge for me, the portion of my cup in the day that I call upon Him.
In His hands I entrust my spirit, in the time I sleep or am awake, and with my spirit, my body, Adonai is with me. I shall not fear."
There is not a Christian who could argue against the powerful and message of this song. It rings of the prophecy, the revelation of our Messiah given to us by John:
And the four beasts had each of them six wings about him; and they were full of eyes within: and they rest not day and night, saying, Holy, holy, holy, Lord God Almighty, which was, and is, and is to come.
(Revelation 4:8)
I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end, the first and the last.
(Revelation 22:13)
The Adone Olam speaks the hopes and wishes of every religion in every culture: that the god whom they serve will care for them and bring them successfully through hard times. Often when we sing the Adone Olam, my mind’s eye visits the cattle cars when Jewish people were being herded to extermination camps. One lonely voice would begin to sing the Adone Olam, the host would chime in, though they knew they were going to their certain death. Their faith in the God of Israel was unshaken.
Trouble, death and persecution is not new to the people of Israel; but neither is the Adone Olam. And even though this humble nation has borne the ferocity of some of the most powerful kingdoms of the world, still the Adone Olam is sang with absolute and beautiful confidence.
I will trust Him no matter what.
