Shalom, gentlemen. I thought I would put in my two 'mites',
I agree, Immersion is a mitzvah; Mar 16:16 Whoever believes and is immersed will be saved, but whoever does not believe will be condemned.
Act 22:16 Now why do you wait? Arise, be immersed, and wash away your sins, calling on the name of the Lord.'
Mat 28:19-20 Therefore go, and make talmidim of all nations, immersing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all things that I commanded you. Behold, I am with you always, even to the end of the age." Amein.
Rav Sha'ul was baptized; Acts 9:18-HE RECEIVED SIGHT FORTHWITH, AND AROSE, AND WAS BAPTIZED.
I found 77 references to baptism/immersion in the Bible. Hmm, G-d must regard this as a fairly important topic. The Greek word for "baptize" is "baptizo" (bap-tid-zo) to submerge, i.e. "fully wet;" to be immersed, is the scriptural way. I don't think "sprinkling" quite qualifies.
Ro 6:4-THEREFORE WE ARE BURIED WITH HIM BY BAPTISM INTO DEATH: THAT LIKE AS MESSIAH WAS RAISED UP FROM THE DEAD BY THE GLORY OF THE FATHER, EVEN SO WE ALSO SHOULD WALK IN NEWNESS OF LIFE.
Col 2:12 BURIED WITH HIM IN BAPTISM, WHEREIN ALSO YE ARE RISEN WITH HIM THROUGH THE FAITH OF THE OPERATION OF G-D, WHO HATH RAISED HIM FROM THE DEAD.
I agree that it is symbolic, and that it is also a literal mitzvah, but also of spiritual significance, ie; regeneration/rebirth, "new beginning".
Ro 6:3-6,8-KNOW YE NOT, THAT SO MANY OF US AS WERE BAPTIZED INTO MESSIAH Yeshua WERE BAPTIZED INTO HIS DEATH? THEREFORE WE ARE BURIED WITH HIM BY BAPTISM INTO DEATH: THAT LIKE AS MESSIAH WAS RAISED UP FROM THE DEAD BY THE GLORY OF THE FATHER, EVEN SO WE ALSO SHOULD WALK IN NEWNESS OF LIFE (regeneration). FOR IF WE HAVE BEEN PLANTED TOGETHER IN THE LIKENESS OF HIS DEATH, WE SHALL BE ALSO IN THE LIKENESS OF HIS RESURRECTION. KNOWING THIS, THAT OUR OLD MAN IS CRUCIFIED WITH HIM (as Yeshua went into the tomb, we are immersed), THAT THE BODY OF SIN MIGHT BE DESTROYED....NOW IF WE BE DEAD WITH MESSIAH WE BELIEVE THAT WE SHALL ALSO LIVE WITH HIM.
I feel the immersion of Yochanan was like mikvah of cleansing in preparation for the coming baptism "UNTO LIFE", as Yochanan was to "MAKE STRAIGHT" the coming of Yeshua. There was a difference, we find that in Luk 7:29-30 And when all the people, including the tax collectors, heard this, they acknowledged G-d's way of righteousness, because they had been baptized with John's baptism. But since the Pharisees and experts in the law had not been baptized by him, they rejected the plan of G-d for themselves.
(I feel this was where the Pharisee's hearts began to "harden", even before Yeshua began his ministry. Did G-d begin "hardening" their hearts as he did Pharaoh to begin putting into place the series of events that led to the Crucifixion? but I'm getting off topic
)
I agree, I believe we receive Ruach HaKodesh AFTER immersion.
Mt 3:16,17-AND Yeshua, WHEN HE WAS BAPTIZED, WENT UP STRAIGHTWAY OUT OF THE WATER: AND, LO, THE HEAVENS WERE OPENED UNTO HIM, AND HE SAW THE SPIRIT OF ELOHIM DESCENDING LIKE A DOVE, AND LIGHTING UPON HIM: AND LO A VOICE FROM HEAVEN, SAYING, THIS IS MY BELOVED SON, IN WHOM I AM WELL PLEASED.
Notice in this verse Yeshua is filled with the spirit AFTER he came up "out of the water". This order of events is also seen in this verse;
Acts 2:38. REPENT AND BE BAPTIZED EVERY ONE OF YOU…AND YOU SHALL RECEIVE THE GIFT OF THE HOLY GHOST.
In 2 Ki:5, when Naaman the was told by the prophet Elisha to dip in the river seven times he would be healed; it was not the water that healed, it was his obedience to what G-d said to do. I feel it is the same with immersion. There is no power in the water or in the act alone, it is t'shuva/repentance followed by obedience,(immersion), that completes the mitzvah, In order to receive Ruach HaKodesh.
So it is my view that this is a mitzvah that MUST be kept; if you repent, and believe, be immersed.
Rom 6:9-11 knowing that Messiah, being raised from the dead, dies no more. Death no more has dominion over him! For the death that he died, he died to sin one time; but the life that he lives, he lives to G-d. Thus also consider yourselves also to be dead to sin, but alive to G-d in Messiah Yeshua our Lord.
I hope I am not too far off
Shalom, Rick
