I don't know if this is the right category to put this thread, but it does pertain to keeping one of the mitzvot, so here goes. From Judaism 101 : a list of the 613 mitzvot, under the heading " ", # 16 states: "That every person shall write a scroll of the for himself ",(Deut 31:19). When I read this verse from my NIV translation (my Complete Jewish Bible is at home) it says " Now write down for yourselves this song and teach it to the Israelites and have them sing it, so it may be a witness for me against them. " then at the end of Deut 31:30 it refers to the song of Moses and quotes its in its entirety in Deut 32:1-43. My question is two-fold. First is it the song of Moses that should be written down and kept by each of us or as is commonly taught that we should make for ourselves a scroll. If it is the that we should make for ourselves, does it have to be a written scroll or would having our Bibles meet the requirement of the mitzvot? Shalom Chaverim, Joe

I would defend a more literal interpretation of this, that it was a commandment to Moshe to write it down, but it is a command to all of us to recite it.
