Whats in a name?

My greetings to all who read this,

One thing I have noted in the bible is that many peoples names had a specific meaning and that their name was given to them by the Lord. I was wondering if you think that this still happens today, that God gives people name with specific meanings, and that this meaning has something to do with that persons calling?

Personally I think that the Lord is still doing this, He is the same yesterday, today and tomorrow. I would like to share with you how I got my name (which is Mark) and see what you think about it.

1. I was born 2 weeks late on the 25th April, which is held by some Christian denominations as the Feast of St Mark the Evangelist (who, it is believed, wrote the Gospel of Mark). But Mum and dad didn't know this at the time.

2. Mum and dad could not decide on a name for me, mum wanted Kieth but dad did not like it to say the least.

3. Dad's sister suggested the names Mark and John. These are the 2 names of the person traditionally believed to have written the Gospel of Mark ( and whose feast I was born on).

4. Mum and dad could not decide which one to use, they liked both equally but only wanted to use one. So they tossed a coin to decide, in other-words they cast lots to decide my name.

5. Proverbs 16:33 in the Amplified bible says this "The lot is cast into the lap, but the decision is wholly of the Lord [even the events that seem accidental are really ordered by Him].

So, I personally believe that the decision to call me Mark was wholly of the Lord and that all the events surrounding my birth were ordered by Him, they were not accidental. So, therefore, my name must have some meaning to me and to God.

The Strong's concordance says that the name Mark means 'Large Hammer', therefore God is saying that I am His large hammer and there are some things He wants to use me to break down or shatter (spiritually I think).

I walked up to a new fellow at a church I had attended for many years and said to him, "Hello, my name is Mark, too. I was here first so you have to change your name."

It's a dangerous name, I've found. I almost fell off a ladder once because the neighbor had a hair-lipped dog. It kept yapping at me, "mark, mark, mark, mark, mark!"

I am convinced that a person's name has spiritual connotations. As we decide the names of our children, we are wise to take that into consideration and to prayerfully be led by the Spirit of Adonai.

I'd say many theologians believe this or else the names of biblical personalities would not be used as evidence of a person's quality or character as it is (though to say this use is current is something that will make many uncomfortable).

At the same time, as Macabbee, myself; I would caution against running around looking for things to hit. Walking closely as a disciple of a Messiah is where you find direction and purpose, not looking for your personal nitch. I've also found that my character has gone very much from an eight pound sledge to a five ounce ball-peen. Very often, the way that we choose to define our function in life is not consistent with the purpose for which Adonai has in store. A tool in the hand of Adonai must be rightly conditioned for the job He is doing. Otherwise, we find ourselves just flying off the handle.

Thank you, dear brother for your reply. I may have come across a bit over zealous in my first message, I do tend to be cautious about my actions and what I hit out at in prayer, word and action. One of the principles that I live by is that I will be led by the Spirit in all that I do. I only want to do what the Lord is doing, say only what the Father is saying, pray only what the Lord is praying. I seek God first, ask Him what to aim at then go for it, after all I am just the hammer, ADONAI Is the one doing the aiming and swinging, I have to be willing to be used by Him.

Hi Reuel,

What does the Lord want me to hammer, very good question. At present He has been leading me in to intercessory prayer with groups of like minded Christian here with the purpose of taking these Islands (Shetland) back from the enemy. Over the four years that I have walked with the Lord there has been an increasing prophetic move here, which has in turn lead to a heightened level of spiritual warfare for these islands.

We meet once a week but are in contact most days, sharing what the Lord has shown us and we pray most fervently.

Another thing the Lord has led me to pray for is Israel and the Jewish people among the nations. There was a prayer conference here last August at which there was a speaker talking on praying for Israel. This was an international event with delegates from as far away as Australia and America (26 nations represented). There was a leader of a messianic gathering in America there too! Well, at the end of the talk all those with a heart to pray for Israel came to the front. I went and spent about 5 minutes with my face in the carpet weeping like I have never wept before. It was an intercession at a depth I had never reached before, the whole thing was amazing, there were even shofars being blown, people shouting and at least 10 other weeping like me. The carpet was actually soaked where my face had been because of the river of tears coming out of my eyes.

Since then I have had a much deeper intensity in my intercession for Israel (and Shetland). It is mainly directed at the spiritual strongholds that blocks the flow of the Holy Spirit, such as human tradition, the religious spirit that says it all has to be done in one certain way, against the division of the church, against the spirit of compromise which seeks to meet the worlds expectations rather than the Lords. I avoid praying against people, that is just wrong, we are to love the person not pray against them. It is the sin in a persons life that needs to be prayed against not the person themselves.
