Translations

One of the members of my study group has a copy of ; "Restoration of Original Sacred Name Bible". I must say I have not seen one of these before, I thought I had seen or studied all the available translations. This is definitely not the "Restored King James Version" that I have a copy of. Are any of you familiar with this version?
I will give a brief synopsis of it:

This is a Sacred Name edition of Rotherham's Emphasized Bible. It uses the name "YAHVAH" (instead of the spelling/pronunciation "YHWH") for the name of God the Father, in place of the words "Lord" when it applies to the God the Father. Likewise sometimes the word "God" is replaced with the name "YAHVAH". The words "El" and "Elohim" are also used in place of the word "God". The names "YAHVAHSHUA" and "Yeshua" are used in place of the name "Jesus" and "Yeshua". The word "Messiah" is used instead of the word "Christ". The title of this Holy Bible is "Restoration of Original Sacred Name Bible", Based on the "Rotherham's Emphasized Bible" written in the late 1800s. Where the scripture text of this Bible differs from that of Rotherham's Emphasized Bible, it is documented in the introduction and in the center margin notes. The title page further says"Prominent numbers cross-reference, special section on Parables and Miracles of the Bible, Concordance". Copyright 1976
The New Testament Title page says "The New Testament of Our Master and Saviour Yahvahshua the Messiah (commonly called Jesus Christ). Restoration of Original Sacred Name New Testament. The Restoration of Original Sacred Name Version is designed to restore to the Scriptures the Sacred Name of the MOST HIGH and his Son from the Sacred Original on the Basis of the Rotherham Version. Revised by Missionary Dispensary Bible Research."
The Preface has excerpts from the Introductions of the Newberry Bible, the American Standard Version, and Rotherham's Emphasized Bible regarding the Divine Name (Yahvah/YHWH/Jehovah). Surprisingly this Bible makes no reference to the "New World Translation of the Holy Scriptures" which was the first Bible to use the Divine Name (in the form of Jehovah) both extensively throughout the Old Testament and in many places in the New Testament.
Paragraphs are in verse format in two columns per page with scripture cross references in the center column and some footnotes at the bottom of the page.
The back of the Bible includes a special section on "Parables and Miracles of the Bible" and Concordance section of 136 pages. The concordance appears to be based upon a sacred name version of a King James Authorized Version concordance.

I would appreciate any input or opinion on this, thanx.

HI Rick,

I've held and perused a copy of "the Scriptures" as I believe this version is titled. Nothing jumped out at me as being completely off the watt; but, it was a long time ago. The guy who loaned it to me also loaned me "Fossilized Customs" which I found pretty distasteful and the affect undoubtedly carried over with the Scriptures.

First, I always look at the background of the translator just a little bit. The "Sacred Name" theological persuasion of theology places Adonai (God the Father) at the highest place of honor. This perspective, for some, confuses the deity of Messiah or one-ness of Adonai. So when handling this text, I would take a look at such verses as Matthew 28:18, John 20:28 and Ephesians 4:4-6.

Second, there are some pet doctrines of my own that I always want to look at like the relationship between Jew and gentile in Romans 11, and the appeal to live rightoeusly in Romans 6.

There are also some mistranslations that are found in most "King James based" versions that are not well known. In Genesis 8:10 and Genesis 8:12 the word "stayed" (King Kames) is two entirely different words with vastly different meanings; yet they are translated the same. When I find in most texts they are translated stayed or waited, I assume that this text was not translated from the original; that the only portions of the Scripture that underwent deep scrutiny for translation were portions that were of necessary concern to the translator. I guess what I'm saying is that, since there are already at least 40 different English trranslations floating around right now, to feel the need to come up with another one must certainly have his own agenda.

Another mistranslation that is more commonly corrected is in Romans 14:14. The word translated "unclean" is not "akathratos" but "koinos" and would rightly be translated "common". Sterns' Complete Jewish Bible missed this one (much to my disappointment).

I have not read this version of the the Bible. But, it sounds like one that should be avoided. Like so many in the "Sacred Name" Movement, the translater of this bible when it comes to some of it's names deal in sloppy Hebrew and simply - make things up -

The name they came up with..."YAHVAHSHUA" is simply made up. No person in the Bible has ever been named this. This is simply something they made up to satisfy their own theology. Similiarly we see the same theological satisfying names such as "Yahooshua", or "Yeshua"... as found in the "Sacred Name" Movement. These names simply don't exist in the Bible...People made these names up to satisfy the demands of their own beliefs. In the quest to be more set-apart and more different from everyone else...it is very tempting to make things up. The heart is deceitfully wicked, whom can know it? People come up with very creative studies to try to back up their beliefs when it comes to their new name creations, but it just comes down to bad scholarship in my estimation. None of these individuals whom have come with these new name creations are credible scholars.

"Yeshua" is the name of Messiah and it means salvation in Hebrew. No controversy there. Perhaps the most accurately people could stray from this would be it's close equivilent; "Yehoshua" most commonly translated as "Joshua" in the scriptures.

Just to clarify -- this version uses "Yah-shua" (without the dash) as a version of Messiah's name, not Yeshua.  I noticed this forum changes "Yah-shua" to Yeshua so it's confusing!
