It's recently hit me that Judah married a Cannaniteness which would make almost all Jews non-Jews by the rule matrilineal descent... Also, Solomon's mother was Bathsheba who was the wife of a Hittite so Solomon who made the Temple would be a non-jew by the rule.
Why is the rule still believed by so many when it creates so many paradoxes?

Tra-dition...tradition! Does "Fiddler On The Roof" come to mind? ...So, why did they make this a requirement?? Rabbinic halachah arose to make sure that they could determine if one was Jewish or not. If during times of persecution (or otherwise) a non Jewish woman was raped by someone (presumedly a Goy) than whom could tell for sure if the child was Jewish?? The answer to the dilemma was to create halachah that stated that only if the mother was Jewish was the child Jewish. There would be no questions then in regards to the Jewishness of the child if the mother was known to be Jewish. Of course this is not a law, we are not bound by Talmud, and DNA tests are easily performed today. I would say the ruling is fallable in regards to determing the Jewishness of an individual today. Just my thoughts on the matter.... Shalom, Reuel
