So today after church my son told me that he learned the 1st commandment in Sunday school.
Which is Great until he said... Thou shalt have no other gods before me...
The reason why I have a problem with this is that the CJB and the JPS both show the first commandment to be: I am the Lord your God who brought you out of the Land of Egypt... A book I am reading "Jewish Literacy" by a non-Christian Rabbinical Jew (hope I said that right... if not I'm sorry) also lists the first commandment as is shown in the CJB.
So which is correct? ;D

To the extent that we extend graciousness to all who are beginning to learn the things of Adonai, I would say both are correct. This because in the parred down version that your son has learned, the identity of the God that is being identified is presumed. Yet, this is a presumption that we take far too lightly in the Christina faith. When we talk about "God" of course we are talking about the God who delivered the Israelites from bondage. Yet, making this presnmuption has also allowed this God to be redefined and watered down in His identity so that He no longer is the deliverer for the house of bondage, the land of Mitzraim (the land of many evils); but the really, really rich and powerful guy who has invited us all to a great party after we die. What you will find is that the Church rarely teaches abandonment of or in any way suggests deviance from the . They simply teach an oversimplification of the Old Testament texts that does not allow the subject to come up.
