One of the things I find interesting in this week's portion is the age that one is actually considered an adult (Biblically speaking). Over, and over in these first few chapters of the book of Numbers we see that age is 20 years old. So, where does the age of 13 for bar mitzvah (son of the commandment) come from? Shalom, Reuel

So self, what do you think about Numbers 3:40-45? Why...I am glad you asked "And YHVH said unto Moses, Number all the firstborn of the males of the children of Israel from a month old and upward, and take the number of their names. And thou shalt take the Levites for me I am YHVH instead of all the firstborn among the children of Israel; and the cattle of the Levites instead of all the firstlings among the cattle of the children of Israel. And Moses numbered, as YHVH commanded him, all the firstborn among the children of Israel. And all the firstborn males by the number of names, from a month old and upward, of those that were numbered of them, were twenty and two thousand two hundred and threescore and thirteen. And YHVH spake unto Moses, saying, Take the Levites instead of all the firstborn among the children of Israel, and the cattle of the Levites instead of their cattle; and the Levites shall be mine: I am YHVH. - Numbers 3:40-45 This passage demonstrates that the high priesthood was first the responsiblity of the firstborn, but was transfered to the Levites. This is an interesting concept in the light of Hebrews 12:23.... "But ye are come unto mount Sion, and unto the city of the living G'd, the heavenly Jerusalem, and to an innumerable company of angels, To the general assembly and congregation of the firstborn, which are written in heaven, and to G'd the Judge of all, and to the spirits of just men made perfect, And to Yeshua the mediator of the new covenant, and to the blood of sprinkling, that speaketh better things than that of Abel." - Hebrews 12:22-24 Any comments (besides myself ) Reuel

How do we get 20,000 males from 4 generations or 19 males. My #'s could be wrong. Seems to me to be impossible to get these #'s in such a short time???

What 19 men are you asking about?
Athiests may think they know more than you do about the Bible. But don’t let them convince you of that. A little digging and some common sense usually proves them wrong. Our problem is they have gotten away with flummoxing Christians (where they may actually know more) for so long they are confident, which can make them seem formidable. They are not formidable, just arrogant. But they do present you with an opportunity to learn as well as to evangelize.
Exodus 12:41 says that the Israelites were in Egypt for 430 years. That is far more than 4 generations. Then there was the time in the desert. Also consider that a household was numbered by all the family members, servants, hired men and slaves. So if your atheist is saying it is impossible for 12 men to sire that many offspring; maybe, but it’s a moot point. Their household could easily do that in 430+ yrs.
Exodus 12:41 (KJV) And it came to pass at the end of the four hundred and thirty years, even the selfsame day it came to pass, that all the hosts of the Lord went out from the land of Egypt.
As for humans living 900 yrs, if they did prove that they’d burry the story so as not to lend support to the Bible. I do remember reading years back that some university did computerized aging studies on the human skeletal structure, extrapolating bone formation to several hundred years. What those skeletons resembled was some of our ancestors, according to evolutionists reconstructions. But that isn’t really proof. Best I can tell you is that is one of those things that unless he is the six thousand year old man and so was witness to those times, neither of you can prove or disprove that claim.
