I am studying biblical sacrifice. So far, I have come up with the following:
1. It is symbolic; representative of the cosmos and/or the heavenly temple.
2. It is only to be engaged in within certain prescribed parameters, which are very strict.
3. From what I can tell thus far, it seems to be only for "unintentional" sin and only certain ones. For instance, am I correct in saying that there is no temple sacrifice for murder? I noticed that David for example was told he was forgiven by God, but there is not indication of sacrifice first.
4. Reparation was required BEFORE sacrifice. The reparation part, was the part that is a priority to G-d.
5. The meaning of sacrifice is to "approach" G-d. Prayer is another way we approach G-d. But prayer, like sacrifice, is an abomination if done in a wrong manner.
6. There have been variious times when Israel has been without a temple, including for instance when Daniel and others were exiled to Persia and the temple was destroyed. He used prayer to approach G-d.
I have a question: when killing of an animal was done away from the temple, away from Jerusalem, was it, or was it not considered to be sacrifice? Was the animal just killed, or was there an element of sacrifice to it? I am so mystified about this. If sacrifice was only to be done at the temple, then am I to assume that killing an animal away from the temple was ok but it was not considered to be a sacrifice? Because when it talks about hunting (in some manner) a wild animal in the field, it says to drain the blood out, not to consume the blood.
Generally wild animals are not considered Kosher today as following Kosher killing of them would be problematic.
