Here are a few notes I took from this weeks Gospel reading. A lot of my notes came from the yashanet Matthew study.
Gospel – Luke 4-6
Luke 4:1-13 Yeshua tempted in the Wilderness
Luke 4:2 haSatan – Hebrew for the adversary, opponent or rebel (Isaiah 14:11-15, Ezekiel 28:11-19, Job 1, 2, 40, 41, 42:6, Genesis 3 & Revelation 12:9)
Luke 4:2 Forty Days - Moses received all the after fasting 40 days. Yeshua was tempted to break after fasting 40 days.
4:3 Son of God (Isaiah 9:5-7, Micah 5:1-2, Psalm 2:7, Proverbs 30:4, Daniel 7:13)
Luke 5:1-11 Miraculous Catch of Fish
5:4 - Catching fish in deep water can be likened to catching men in deep words. "The words of a mans mouth are like deep waters." (Proverbs 18:4) You will not catch very many fish in shallow water and cannot catch fish on dry land. Yet even in deep water without God we will work hard and catch nothing.
Some questions: Have you ever read something or heard someone speak and thought this man’s writing style or speech is dry? His or her understanding is shallow? Have you ever heard something and thought wow that’s deep? How about the phrase catching someones attention?
Luke 6:1-5 Yeshua is Lord of the Shabbat
Here’s something from yashanet on this subject.
An argument could be made here that Yeshua did not consider picking grain to satisfy ones hunger to be violating the Shabbat and was against there oral law interpretation. Perhaps when David ate of the bread of the face God considered him to be his priest? Cohenim worked on Shabbat. I will definitely study this some more.
Luke 6:17-19
Yeshua (God) is Most Holy.
Luke 6:20-26 The Beattitudes
The Kingdom of Heaven (Shamayim in Hebrew) – The word heaven here is another name for God. Judaism uses many names for YHVH (Adonai, Elohim, HaShem, El, Etc…). I’ve heard someone teach that this was done to prevent us from breaking the commandment that says “You shall not take the name of the Lord your God in vain, for the Lord will not leave him unpunished who takes His name in vain.”
Blessed are – Asher in Hebrew means happy and fortunate
Luke 6:27-36
(Leviticus 19:18)
Luke 6:43-45 Yeshua Teaches on Good and Bad Trees
Here’s another quote from yashanet.

Luke 6:1-5 Yeshua is Lord of the Shabbat
Here’s something from yashanet on this subject.
“One of the concepts lost upon the modern reader of the Bible (unfamiliar with the Jewishness of the Scriptures), is that Yeshua and the Pharisees were not arguing from vastly different backgrounds. Yeshua Himself taught as a Pharisee and His dialogue with these religious leaders can very well be considered a ‘family argument.’ Had Yeshua been coming from some new non-Pharisaical viewpoint, the Pharisees would have had little concern for what He was saying. However, He was arguing within the family, and beginning to convince people that many of the Pharisees were both hypocritical and wrong in their opinion about him.” “The section…has to do with an accusation made by certain Pharisees regarding some of Yeshua's disciples, picking and eating grain in a field during the Sabbath.” “The does prohibit ‘work’ on Shabbat, and the oral Law of the time would support the Pharisees claim.”

Here’s another quote from yashanet.
“The key here is that the fruits are coming from "the tree." What is the tree? In Judaism the is called the Tree of Life.” “…[T]he phrase "to bring forth fruit" in a Hebraic spiritual context, refers to deeper spiritual insight and teachings.”
