Very simply put, the
has been given to demonstrate our need for the Messiah. When we are free to determine for ourselves what is right and wrong, we justify our own actions and condemn others.
places all of us on equal standing before God.
Therefore by the deeds of the law there shall no flesh be justified in his sight: for by the law is the knowledge of sin. But now the righteousness of God without the law is manifested, being witnessed by the law and the prophets; Even the righteousness of God which is by faith of Jesus Christ unto all and upon all them that believe: for there is no difference: For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God;
(Romans 3:20-23 KJV)
Unfortunately, this is carried to an extreme measure in the anti-nomain Church: that once we have Messiah, we hav no longer any need of
. Yet, this is exactly the heresy that Paul adamantly combated in Romans:
What shall we say then? Shall we continue in sin, that grace may abound? God forbid. How shall we, that are dead to sin, live any longer therein? Know ye not, that so many of us as were baptized into Jesus Christ were baptized into his death? Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death: that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life.
(Romans 6:1-4 KJV)
Paul goes on to describe
as the vehicle through which we learn to walk in righteousness:
But we know that the law is good, if a man use it lawfully; Knowing this, that the law is not made for a righteous man, but for the lawless and disobedient, for the ungodly and for sinners, for unholy and profane, for murderers of fathers and murderers of mothers, for manslayers, For whoremongers, for them that defile themselves with mankind, for menstealers, for liars, for perjured persons, and if there be any other thing that is contrary to sound doctrine; According to the glorious gospel of the blessed God, which was committed to my trust.
(1 Timothy 1:8-11 KJV)
Most people stop reading this passage when they get to menstealers. However, see how Paul concludes, that "it" (
) is to reveal "any other thing that is contrary to sound doctrine."
is for the establishment of "sound doctrine".
Finally, we understand that
, as the definition of sin (darkness), is the guide for establishing within us a spirit of fellowship and unity between each other and toward God.
This then is the message which we have heard of him, and declare unto you, that God is light, and in him is no darkness at all. If we say that we have fellowship with him, and walk in darkness, we lie, and do not the truth: But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship one with another, and the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin. If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. If we say that we have not sinned, we make him a liar, and his word is not in us.
(1 John 1:5-10 KJV)
My little children, these things write I unto you, that ye sin not. And if any man sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous: And he is the propitiation for our sins: and not for ours only, but also for the sins of the whole world. And hereby we do know that we know him, if we keep his commandments. He that saith, I know him, and keepeth not his commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him. But whoso keepeth his word, in him verily is the love of God perfected: hereby know we that we are in him. He that saith he abideth in him ought himself also so to walk, even as he walked.
(1 John 2:1-6 KJV)
It is by the
that we acknowledge our need for a Savior to gain access to Adonai. It is in the
that we learn to walk in obedience to Him. It is through the
that we live in unity and fellowship with each other as in Him.
